I love how not winning a global tournament is considered losing.
It is.

The fact you don't consider it so is illustrative as to why you're happy to tolerate mediocrity. It's like Billy Sneddon after the 1974 election - "We didn't lose. We just didn't win enough seats to win".

Well I wouldn't consider Stoke not winning the Premier League as them "losing" it. I'd consider losing to be a thing between two sides, not a whole tournament.

The Premier League is an aggregate competition though. First past the post - a bit like the rankings system in some respects.

I mean you have a winner of a tournament, and if you competed in that tournament but didn't win it, then you're entitled to have the big L painted on your forehead.

Just as I told my son last weekend when his under 10s side didn't win the Gala Day they played in. You've got to belt this idea of "Oh we tried and had a good crack at it but lost by 50, never mind" out of them young. It's imperative. There can be no place for acceptance of medicority in competitive sport. None.

This "Oh bad luck mate you lost by 20 goals but you tried" attitude is pathetic mollycoddling. If you are smart enough to con a maggot to give you a dodgy free kick then kick it into the man on the mark, you are worthy of derision for being the loser that you are. If you give of your best and are thoroughly beaten by a better side that is one thing, but if you are incapable of at least competing, then go and become a science nerd and put together spread sheets on the game. Devise a new version of Duckworth-Lewis.

But you don't belong on the field.

These are the facts.

Like to have a marking contest with you, ****. You might grab the ball but you won't be taking the kick.

Good post, concise and conclusive.

That is exactly our best line up atm. The only debatable point is whether you'd bat Watson at 3, 4 or open.

Wade should open or bat at 3. Watson at either 3 or 4, Dussey the other. Dussey needs time to build an innings and have the others bat around him.

Clarke is right at 5, and Bailey is right at 6.

Mike Hussey finishes at seven, with Smith's unorthodox hitting at 8.
Watson would be shocking at 4. His weakness is working around singles with the field back, which is precisely what needs to happen at 4. Clarke is our best batsman (Mussey excepted) but he needs time to get set - he needs to bat higher if anything. Dussey's technique will be deeply fraught against two moving new balls.

Seriously, just no.

Could always open with Wade and Watson, with Warner at three or four.

Our very own Three W's.

Didn't realize we had any kind of starting point, not sure what's with the roll eyes though
I guess you just don't read the things you quote?

As quoted by you...

I think a couple of post-Ashes thrashings that we've received, combined with being dicked 5-0 in India last year has overshadowed how well England have done in ODI series over the last 4-5 years.

Other than the 3 series I've mentioned, I think the only ODI series we've lost have been our series against New Zealand in 2008.

Fwiw
Not winning == Loosing. in the case of tournaments.

Some itstl suggestions arround here re: the aus lineup.
I think that shuffling watson arround the order is fraught with danger and will do nothing to help a somewhat out of form batsman.

Mussey is out with family issues for those asking.

Before this match I named my XI and it didn't feature Forrest or Doherty. They are plainly not up to Australian ODI standards. Get rid of both!

Reckon Oz are really missing guys like Dan Christian - could easily bat 6/7 and bowl useful overs

Seems very short on options to me especially as Clarke seems to regard Smith as a specialist batsman

Doherty doesnt have a bad record but he is simply not one of Oz's best 5 bowling options in virtually any conditions so I dont really see the point

IMO, if you have to play a spinner, Hauritz and SOK are better options as you will lose nothing on the bowling and they are far better batsmen

Forrest is not a bad player but I cant really see him scoring enough runs to justify inclusion over someone like Christian who can also bowl.

Unfortunately, the squad is what it is

Forrest is a bad player at the shorter forms. I know selectors like bringing in players in ODIs first before Tests to get some experience in the squad but I fear for Forrest its going to tarnish his chances at playing Tests in the future.

Doherty tries hard and rarely does a terrible job and is certainly a reasonable squad member but he shouldn't have a mortgage in the XI all the time. FTR I didn't watch him bowl yesterday.
