You do have the Duleep Trophy but when players are picked from the national side via performances in U19 and IPL - the mindset becomes 'what's the point', along with the fact that IPL also pays a lot more than slaving away for days on end on hot days and flat wickets, it's a surprise you don't see people just flat out retiring from Ranji once they get an IPL contract.

No, I'm not.
Now Gavaskar is hated, wasn't as much back then. Plus, he seemed petulant but for the wrong reasons - different to Ganguly. People liked Gavaskar because of his ability - they liked Ganguly because of his personality - because he didn't back off (opposite to literally walking off the field like Gavaskar).
