India's bowling efforts haven't changed much over the 5 years. The **** ups in the batting is what has affected India's stay at the top it seems.

Australia will climb this list very quickly imo.

They are going to have a very very ominous pace attack in the next few years, could be firing as early as the Ashes in England 2013.

Pattinson and Cummins are probably two of the best young prospects in the world atm, Hazlewood and Coulter-Nile havn't debuted yet, who are top class prospects imo.

The 2013 Ashes double-header currently has the potential to be some of the most exciting cricket in a good while, with two quality attacks testing the batsmen. Similarly the three Tests against Saffa this upcoming summer promise a lot.

Interestingly the averages don't show much gap between Aus and Pakistan for the last 2 years. However I get the feeling that this gap will be getting bigger

Are you talking about bowling attacks?
In terms of their current attack I don't think they're that far apart, with Pakistan marginally ahead due to Ajmal's awesome year. Can't really associate this bowling attack based on the performance in England, only one bowler is still in the XI and he's likely to go as well when PK returns.

I'm liking the figures steadily getting lower in general there.

But yeah, 5 years doesn't really tell us anything. This time five years ago the opening bowlers for the top three* teams there were Pollock & Ntini, Hoggard & Harmison, and McGrath & Lee.

*I tried to think of who was opening the bowling for Pakistan at the start of 2007 but couldn't organise the various injuries/bannings/retirements of Shoaib/Asif/Naved/etc

Too short IMO, and with that sort of sample size you're best off talking about the performances as they were ie. not on a statistical basis.

The current Aussie attack will decimate England next year if they all stay injury free. No contest.

For my money:

Australia
South Africa (Steyn, Philander, De Lange/Morkel pretty handy)
England
WI could have been great if Roach, Edwards, Taylor could all stay fit simultaneously but that seems like a pipe dream.
