Well Hughes would be behind Cowan now IMO so he'll stay behind him if they both score heavily. I don't think either will play though.
I reckon we're looking at this, as I said before:
1. Warner
2. Watson - or Khawaja/Cowan if he's not fit to bat
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Hussey
6. Christian
If Christian doesn't play then Khawaja will bat 3 (or Watson might even bat there) and the rest will go one down.
Marsh, as far as I can tell, is as good as gone from the first Test.
Not really what I'd pick at all ftr; but yeah.

No chance, seeing as Mussey and Punter have been guaranteed a spot apparently.
Somebody has to make way for Watson, Marsh and/or Christian.
The Christian case is irresistible, (not that I rate him that highly mind):
- Back to back Tests (won't want to overburden the bowlers with Sydney just around the corner
- Harris's fragility
- Watson unable to bowl
- India's perceived strong batting lineup

That would be so ridiculous if he does. Selectors have got to show their decisions aren't fickle and impulsive like Hildick, and are actually based on some proper rationale e.g. Hughes has bad technical issues that won't go away even if he makes a ton here etc.

Inclined to agree.
If he wasn't going to bowl ever again I'd pick him now as a specialist bat as I think he justifies his spot (although it wouldn't be cemented) but as that's not the case, it's far more important that we get him right for his full role. If he can't bowl yet then he's obviously not fully fit and I certainly don't think the difference in batting ability between him and someone like Cowan, Rogers or even Hughes is worth having him out there running between wickets, fielding etc when you consider how important he is to the side at full strength.

If he was to play as a batsman, should he really open? I like Watson as a player, but he instills not a great deal of confidence in me that he can accumulate a good score against quality bowlers up front. I know he averages well as an opener (despite a recent run of outs) but I just don't get a sense of assuance with him opening.
I suppose people will have different view points though.
Assume he's out for this match. Is it in anyway realistic Hughes will play? You'd think not:

I don't get that.
If anything there is a correlation between him bowling few overs, and kicking butt as a batsman and, on the inverse, a correlation (in the last 12 months) between him bowling lots of overs, and not scoring heavily.
So, now that he won't be bowling any overs in Melbourne, we leave him out?
If anything, given the above correlations, there's a better chance of him scoring heavily in Melbourne.
And given our batting woes, frankly the alternatives or even the incumbents are far inferior.

If Watson is fit enough to bat properly, then there is no way in the world I'd play both Khawaja and Cowan over him. Christian batting at 6 is a dire move too imo, even though they could end up going with it. Our batting needs to be bolstered as much as possible atm, not compromised with the 'benefit' of some extra pie throwing in the attack.
I really don't think the 'experience' argument holds as much weight as some people make out, but having a batting line up with Warner, Khawaja and Cowan is pretty dangerous especially considering Hussey and Ponting could quite likely provide **** all as well.

He doesn't kick butt. He makes 30-60 at best and gets out. If that's what we're happy with for a top three player "kicking butt", we'll be mediocre forever.
