He does seem to have that happy knack.

We might have won that test in India with him and Southee - instead we had Bennett and Patel.
I'm still not overly convinced about Southee as a Test cricketer tbh. In between the some magic deliveries, there's still too much rubbish & inconsistency. I'd never question his ability but needs to toughen up mentally for me.

@Zinzan - What I said about Tim 2 years ago is that he needed two things.
1) To develop the ability to push it through at 140 (which he now does at his peak speed)
2) To get a gig in county cricket for a season to play cricket every day and develop his game. So many great bowlers have credited this experience with being the making of them.

Do you think he's mentally tough enough atm?

Torture is having two classes whilst your country is on track to beat Australia in a cricket test match for the first time since 1993, and for the first time IN Australia since 1985. Luckily I was in the computer room grading presentations. Had the cricinfo score window at the bottom of the screen. Almost let out a yelp of joy when the final wicket fell. ***king unbelievable!

Had quite a sunny disposition for the last few minutes of class.

Oh, and according to cricinfo, a military medium pacer has run through the Australia middle order:dry:

Marto, I was wrong about you. Absolute legend. Would have been great to have won by the 2 runs you made in your innings.

Even when Marto does retire, we will be in good stead for the future.

**** knows what the selectors will do when Vettori comes back. Very good dilemma to have.
Gutted for you missing so much of it DOG

Well done kiwis after nearly blowing the edge they enjoyed in the match three times.

Good bowling from Bracewell. I bet they're really thanking the rain gods as the ball does seem to swing a lot more in the morning.

Shocking performance though from the Aussie middle-order again. There will have to be changes for the Boxing Day test despite the selectors' seeming reluctance to drop batsmen.

Hope this proves to be a shot in the arm for NZ cricket.

This Hobart pitch was more New Zealand than any pitch NZ has produced in the last few years. Wish we'd had this curator last time India toured
Australia should look to prepare some green-tops like this against India...we've seen how their batsmen handle those against England

Generally agree with your sentiments there adub (and a good summary), but I contest the suggestion Watson wouldn't have done better than Hughes in the swinging conditions. He is probably one of our better batsmen against the moving ball, and the fact he is right handed would have made a massive difference.
Maybe but Watson's been quite ordinary over the past ten months or so with the bat.

It's not gonna be hard to average more than 10.25 for the series though haha. How useful would a classic Watson 50 have been in that match?

I think he lacks experience - he has 15 tests under his belt. I think toughness will come with more tests and a county cricket contract.

HE did step up today though with some great deliveries in THAT spell and was unlucky not to get Warner as well when Warner was playing recklessly.
