I see every series as a great opportunity to select the best team possible for each match and perform as well as possible given the resources available. This series is no exception. Selectors needn't try to do more than that, particularly when they aren't very good, but I have no doubt they will.

I'd axe Johnson and play the rest you listed, personally. Whether to play Ponting or not would be an extremely tough call if all the batsmen were fit but as it stands they won't be so he's got himself a lifeline.

With Marsh and Watson likely out Ponting will stay.

I'd have a quiet word in his ear though and let him know that while he's getting these two tests against NZL, it's the selectors' strong preference that Khawaja and Warner remain in the side thereafter, given that they're two of the young guys we want to get established at test level to rejuvenate the batting lineup. Therefore unless Ponting tons up fairly convincingly Hobart will likely be curtains.

Haddin's probably earned himself a stay of execution with his innings last night, unless Wade does something remarkable in the A game or the new panel is feeling particularly brave.

I think Johnson's gone, and rightly so.

Siddle will probably remain in the squad for Brisbane, given he wasn't attrocious in this test despite some unkind figures. But if Harris is fit again and Cutting or Pattinson dominate in the A game his place could be in jeopardy.

New Zealand kick off the tour with a warm-up game against Australia A, beginning on November 24, and Taylor had a theory about why visiting sides were made to start at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

"The wicket is very flat and Australia put a lot of touring teams there to tire the bowlers out," Taylor said. "So we'll be going there to conserve the bowlers' energy as much as possible.

That would explain why they're playing all the bowlers in the warm-up.

"There's probably going to be the talking point of whether we go in with four quicks, or three quicks and Dan [Vettori] batting at No 6. Trent Boult has had an outstanding start to the season. He's been to Australia before and not played so I'm sure he's hurting a little bit there ... [but] even if he bowls well, he still might not make the [test] team. We'll just have to wait and see."

That doesn't seem quite right, surely it's four quicks and Dan batting at No 6 or three quicks and Dan batting at No 7? Or is Dan batting at 6 no matter what? In which case, why mention his batting position at all? :huh:

Sounds like Boult is on the outer for the first test and that he'll have to prove himself in the warm-up to force his way in (and even then it's not guaranteed).

Don't expect too much action in the tour match here in Brissy though, plenty of rain forecast for the next 4 or 5 days.

Haha, going off what PEWS (and himself) describes, he's just going to bowl pacy bouncers at us.

The wicket is supposed to be quite flat and Guptill is the only one of our batsmen who has shown any discomfort against the short ball, so he might go for a few runs if he's going to try and bounce Taylor and Williamson.

I hope we ****ing smash the ****y little ****.

Looks a perfect opportunity to play Warner in place of Watson and let him get fit for India where his bowling may well be needed. As for Ponting, if Marsh is out then he stays in I guess. One of Siddle/MJ has to go, pure and simple. Maybe even both, though it may be a risk to go in with Cummins, Copeland and the injury prone Harris due to experience. Can see Johnson winning a reprieve as they won't want a totally raw attack and his batting at 8 can be useful.

For those who saw a lot of Cummins in the previous test-I've been hearing talk his action might make him a bit injury prone. Does anyone agree? How do you guys feel about the heavy bowling load he's copped in his short long format career so far?
