To be consistent they have to bench Marsh. He's only filling in, Hughes is supposed to be bedding in for the next Ashes - daft idea but there it is - and Ussie was the next off the rank, now that they've got rid of Smith the chancer.

I hope the new baby is making Punter really happy because if he's watched Marsh he might have felt the cold winds of change blowing over him.

Reckon he's under the pump with Khawaja the next most likely candidate. Marsh has just gone out and done what neither of those 2 have done since the got their chance/second chance.

As much as I like Hughes I agree with Andre; he's done nothing since comming back. Khawaja should be persisted with for a few tests yet. I could see a Khawaja/ Hughes shoot out for South Africa and droping Marsh however.

Tbh looking at Hughes' test career as a whole so far, he has been pretty unlucky in regards to the times/circumstances he was picked. In his first Ashes he wasn't exactly given many chances (and he had just gunned it in SA anyway, you can't expect him to perform every series), he failed against Pak but so did the entire team, he did ok against NZ, and he failed in the recent Ashes after being picked when he was in the worst form of his career. This series so far has probably been his only genuine failure given he was picked in very good form. I'm not trying to sugar-coat anything though, he probably should have performed better even given the cirumstances, but still he shouldn't be criticised too harshly yet. Marsh definately deserves to be playing in the next game, but at the same time I just have this really bad feeling it will stall the progress of this team if he stays for the the longer term (because I am doubtful he will succeed yet, a la Marcus North).

All well and good but you've got to take your chances when they are presented. He'd have noone else to blame if he got axed.

If Khawaja can make a handy 40* or so now I reckon it might be Hughes to sit out; if not, its 50:50 Hughes/Khawaja I reckon, with Hughes having had more chances at Test level of late.

If Marsh had had the record so far in test cricket that Hughes has had, I'm sure you wouldn't be sugarcoating it. He has scored one 50 since his second test.

Despite that I think he should be given at least till the end of SA as they made such a statement by ditching Kat. And they seem to really want to invest in him regardless of the sheer ropiness of much of what he does.

It's not that big a thing, a filler in played beautifully in one innings but that's no reason to ditch the plan for the series.

After his A-series runs, all the talk was about how he's in cracking form, damn dem coaches, etc. You'd expect to see some glimpses of that if he was, tbh.
