New Zealand A General Discussion

Not Terrible
Seems like Howsie isn't saying he is a bad keeper though, just referring to how averagely he has kept thus far at Test level.

Here's the score after the first day of NZ EP vs Aus IS.

AIS were in trouble at 9/2 before reaching 304/5 declared. If the cricinfo scorecard can be relied on (not always a given for non-internationals) it was two wickets for McKay and two for Bracewell - looks like he's having an impressive series. Watling out before the close. Hoping for some runs from Flynn, who I much prefer over Broom to take the NZ number 6 spot.

Mildly concerning from a NZ POV that they've sent something closely resembling a genuine 'A' team and just got dicked by a batting lineup of 17 First Class games experience between the lot of 'em. The century-maker has never played a First Class match.

They haven't been dicked yet, in all fairness (unless they actually have today before I see the scorecard).

I would say Australia certainly and India have had a lot more preparation coming into the tournament than we'd had, given they can get outdoors and were probably playing as well.

Not concerned what these guys do in August, as long as they're doing it properly from September onwards.

Bruce Martin 14-1-72-0. When you add to that the fact that he's 31 years old, I think maybe we should look elsewhere.

Not really surprising though. The standard of domestic cricket in New Zealand is widely acknowledged as being very poor. With that in mind we can't really expect our A side to consistently beat even genuine "emerging players" teams like the ones we're facing here. The main goal of NZ A isn't only to win matches, it's to identify the few players who may have the goods to make the step up to the next level, and to let them experience a higher standard of opposition before they make that jump.

And lost his state contract!

Broom 197 off 190 odd, Bracewell 50 odd off 50 odd. Nothing from the rest pretty much

8-) might have to revise my opinion if Broom keeps batting like that! Also I really wouldn't have thought Bracewell had it in him to score runs so consistently.

Apart from that, not very good numbers from the rest of NZ EP. Concerning that bowlers like McKay and Boult are getting smacked around by this AIS side... even if the pitch is not hugely helpful to quicks.

Half the problem will be a lack of cricket. We know Boult can bowl well. McKay has ODI wickets. Just a form thing I reckon. Broom doesn't smash 190 odd in NZ FC that fast either.

To be fair McKay went pretty well in the first innings, and Boult kept it pretty tight. Looks to be a pretty flat pitch.

Glad to see Broom make some good runs, I think i'm one of the very few here who rate him as a classy longer version player. Would love to see him get a test match or two this summer.

I'm most excited about Bracewell. He's contributed in every game, and nigh on every innings.

An all-rounder who bowls high 130s,swings it away late at a good height and gives it tap at around No.8. A real chance to debut against Zimbabwe in our summer I'd wager.

Yes McKay has put up reasonable (but not exceptional) numbers in most matches this series... Boult not so much. It probably is a flat pitch for this match but that begs the question why none of our other batsmen scored runs.

It's winter so they might not be in peak condition, but most of this NZ EP side have played quite a few matches already this tournament so not sure that lack of cricket is a very good excuse.

I'd be interested in knowing how well Bracewell has bowled this series - he's been relatively economical so wonder if that's down to newfound control.

Edit: Just realised Broom hit 10 sixes!

And he has a nice action which is a plus.

Looks like a very interesting final day. More than 500 runs scored! At stumps NZ EP were 10 runs away from outright victory, which would have been really annoying.

3 wickets for Astle. Watling century. Woodcock half century.

Hell of an action, yeah. Really economical, can't see too much happening injury wise plus he's a big, strong lad.

That last day looks a bit of a nonsense. Hardly the sort of three-day cricket we need to be playing. The whole game looked a bit that way, to be fair. Tough to say without being there, but on scoreboard value...

Might as well post this scorecard too - first day of India EP vs NZ EP.

Not a great day for NZ with India scoring at nearly 5 per over to reach 404/6 declared. McKay 3/70 and Boult 2/34 at a good econ rate, and that pair had India at 22/3 at one point. Tastle 6-0-54-0... ugh.

NZ 24/2 in reply with Nicol and Wilson out.

Judging by the fact that I recognise a few of the Indian names (when I'm far from knowledgeable on India cricket), I'd say they're a pretty good side.
