**Official** Sri Lanka in England / Scotland - 2011

I don't think he's a bad batsman, I just think that his average of 54 is horribly misrepresentative when I can think of a whole swathe of players with mid-to-high 40s averages who are better. He's also scored a rather large percentage of his runs with genuine edges at catchable height to third man.
He does seem to hit it in the air in that region sometimes

I'll admit he's not the most talented batsman around but it also takes a lot of grit and determination to succeed as a batsman in test level and I really believe he's got loads of that.

I know his record abroad is rather poor but I've watched him play against quality opposition abroad and nchor the innings and score runs while the rest of the team looked all at sea in difficult situations.

This particular knock isn't the worst either tbh.

Prasanna's batting must have given great joy to Sri Lankan supporters. One would hope that his career sees a new brighter chapter now.
Yep he's been a surprise. Kind of justifying the faith the selectors had in him to play him at 6.

Not Terrible
Just curious, how many unbeaten runs does Sanga need to hit in this innings before his record in England moves to "acceptable"?
If he doesn't get out on this score he will average 33.47 in England. He'll average at least 31.6 if he gets out now/soon.

An acceptable average in England would probably be over 35 so he'd need to score... another 30 odd runs with a NO or 70ish if he gets out.

Yes, I noticed that, before lunch and after lunch, he seemed to struggle, to get anything on the middle of the bat, lots of mi****s and edges.

Supporting England but I must say I'm really happy to see Sangakkara and Samaraweera shut up their critics a little bit, as I'm a big believer in both batsmen. That said, Samaraweera scoring runs often brings more criticism of him than failing does..

I think we both know the reson for that:

Even if he scores a 300* people will probably blame the lacklustre bowling.
Just got out to a soft dismissal as we speak.

But, Sangakkara's record in England takes nothing away from his stature as a player. Every great player has at least one such flaw in his resume. Sanga is a bona fide great of his generation and whether he scores 10 or 325* in one innings is immaterial.

Don't disagree... just would've liked to have seen a 200* so that ***** a decade hence aren't dredging up his average as some sort of proof.

His average in England is more than 'some sort of proof' that he's struggled here, whether it be a weakness against the moving ball, a bit of extra bounce, English bowlers, or just a glitch against one team.

True. We may see Sanga for the player he is, but people down the line will only see the numbers and the highlight reels. The facts will undoubtably be distorted.
