The only guys expected to put up a fight before the series were Sanga and Mahela, with riders attached to them in the form of their previous record.

Both flopped largely, till Sanga came good in the last innings.

Nobody expected Dilshan, Paranavitana and Prasanna to bat like they did.
Dilshan's world class, and you can speak for yourself on Piranah. He's impressed me. Yes, not much was expected of Prassana but evidently he's capable.

PJ and Tremlett take the awards, presumably for exceeding expectations as much as anything else.

Tremlett being MOTM here is a bit odd, but he did put us in a matchwinning position despite all the rain, so that's to be valued I guess.

More of the standard of the batsmen he faced, being a lot better than the bowlers, the England batsmen faced.

Bell averaged 331 and Cook I think around a hundred for the series. And people say batsmen get favoured :p

Good series for England overall. Their bowling ranged between awesome and a bit meh at times I thought, but at the end of the day they did the job and got match practice (in home conditions) in preparation for India's tour.

Can't ask for too much more.

Yes agree, brilliant a lot of the time to average at best, I think they will improve as the summer goes on, like they did, in the winter and last summer. Series lacked the intensity of past series' but that will all change, come India.
Strauss is apparently going to play for Somerset against the touring Indians. Tres and Strauss, opening again,

Ah well rain ruined the series and denied us a 3-0 win but we deserved the win overall and move towards the India series now with plenty of confidence on the back of 8 series unbeaten.

Just means it'll take longer to get to number 1 but we will get there eventually.

I doubt that the rain staying away would have helped at Lord's. Yes, England had got into a good position by the end, but the rain interrupted on the 3rd day when sri lanka were very much on top, so it might have hindered them just as much.

Indeed I wasn't asserting that it was. But statistics don't lie, his poor scores in England prove something.

But that brings us to the question of what makes a great player? Shane Warne struggled in India, but you would find it hard to argue he wasn't one of the greats.
Cbf checking this on statsguru, but I'm pretty sure Sangakkara has played a grand total of 8 Tests in England, stretched over a 9 year period.

His record in England proves nothing. It's perfectly conceivable that he was out of form every time Sri Lanka toured, and I'd be interested to see whether he had the gloves in his first 2 tours.

You can take the sarcastic tone out of your nonsense comment after having another look at statsguru.

Hes played more Test matches in England than anywhere, bar Sri Lanka.

His record in England obviously proves something.

If anything, wicket-keeping probably helps your batting since you get a better idea of what the pitch is doing than anyone else on the field. Helps you improve your concentration aswell.
Fatigue's a disadvantage though.

Average in England as designated keeper is 30.54

Average in England when not keeping wicket is 30.66
The point isn't that it should show a huge marker in his figures, the point is that since giving up the gloves he has become a great batsman. And in that period he has only toured England once.

Yes he failed but the amount of Tests he has played in England is slightly deceptive.

Doesn't it just show that he's improved as a batsman over the years with experience.
