Cricket australia contracts

Not overly fussed with the contract list, largely a non-event as the majority of names appeared locked in based on Australia ‘A’ selection.

The decision to drop Katich was an expected move, and yet it feels very harsh. His form over the past season in Test cricket wasn’t brilliant, but it still feels like he has another season or two to provide consistent starts at the top of the order.

Hughes started to show good signs towards the end of the 2010/2011 season, so I hope the selectors will persevere with him. He was brilliant in the Sheffield Shield final (so was Katich), and it is a big vote of confidence in Hughes for the selectors to move beyond Katich.

Sad to hear about Katich. I'll miss seeing him bat, wearing his preposterously vast helmet.

Katich hard done by, fitting end to his career really as he's never really appeared to have the rub of the green. Much underrated player who would have played 100+ tests if luck hadn't intervened.

At the same time I'm sure everyone can see where they're coming from. Katich has always seemed a 'take one for the team' sort of guy and I had a suspicion before the Ashes that if things went well he might've retired after Sydney anyway to make way for Hughes.

Haha, I remember years ago telling you that I thought that Katich would average 50 in Test cricket by the end of career. Reckon if he didn't get dropped for Symonds for Sri Lanka all those years ago he might of; was never as dominant a player after that. The way he dealt with the Indian attack in 2003/04 at the SCG suggested he'd be a real force to be reckoned with, he never looked the same player at the crease after that. He just looked so assured and hit the ball so cleanly, not the crab-type batsman that finished.

Looks like I got it wrong with his career average anyway, hey mate :)

Haha yeah I recall the outrage on here when he was dropped for Symonds. And I agree he was certainly easier on the eye earlier on in his career.
At the end of the day I think his record's very good considering the treatment he got from the selectors, the fact that he batted out of position for most of his career and the quality of some of the batsmen he was competing with for a spot in the XI. And you weren't a long way off with that 50 avg prediction in the end.

Katich got an amazingly raw deal because of his style. He was good enough to get 7000ish runs in 100 Tests @ 50.

Unfortunately he really was the victim of some shocking selection calls early on in his Test career, which meant every time he returned to the team he was a bit more steadfast as a bat. He became a real nuggety, hard edge, unfashionable player who always seemed to be playing for his spot rather than an attacking batsman which he really looked like he would make his mark as. Reckon it had a huge affect on him mentally and the way he played the game.

Even to this day, him getting dropped cause they wanted Symonds 'as an all-rounder' still baffles me - his return to the Test side was based on his left arm spinners really giving S Waugh an option with the ball, and he'd made every post a winner in all facets of the game only to get bunted. No suprise that he came back a more cluttered cricketer.

I'll put my hand up here - he is my favorite Aussie cricketer. Outstanding bat, all the shots when he got going, the man you'd want in your corner for any battle - outstanding temprament, unflinching courage. Made a fist of everywhere in the order, could bowl and solid in the field. One of the absolute nicest guys in the game too.

Dude get over it, Cheeqs aint coming back. Forget about him changing his one day game, his whole technique was ****.

Just out of interest, you got footage of Katich batting in the 2003/04 Sydney Test vs India...

Either that or this is the longest revenge attack in history and Clarke is the most evil and petty captain since Mark Taylor.
Was my first thought when I saw the cricinfo headline.

It sort of makes some sort of sense, given his age and the retention of three other mid-30 somethings in the (presumed) top 7, but to suggest he's not in the top 25 cricketers in Oz is madness. Be out of character for Katto to give it away in a fit of pique tho; he's made a career out of proving people wrong. Hope he does it again.

The incumbent test spinner not getting a contract is an interesting call too. Does little to dispel the notion that Beer's selection was the first test cap directly attributable to Twatter.

but this is what they do. Decide on a team 12 to 18 months out from the Ashes and then stick with it no matter how well they are going. Worked well last time...
Considering what major test series we have coming up in the next 9 months, Hilditch is right on form by talking about the Ashes 2 years hence. He must be holding someone higher up than him right by the short and curlies as he appears to be the most irrelevant person in CA and that is really saying something.

I mean how desperate is it to give Cummins a contract? Is it that important that he gets to the Academy so Cooley can 'do' things to him?

The marketing men must have had a say in this contract as well as Chappell. I see no reason for a kid with stuff all behind him to be on the list otherwise.

Hildick says that we need Ponting and Mussey in the team to mentor the younger middle order batsmen. Hang on, if your middle order is manned by Clarke, Ponting and Mussey...the bloody middle order is full of mentors...there are no mentor-ees to mentor.

Bloody Punter averaged in the mid 30s over the last two years, and is rising 37 years of age. If not now, then when?
