It's more to do with the word 'flat' acquiring a different meaning from the literal one in cricketing parlance in recent times. It's used to describe a pitch with little lateral movement rather than the literal meaning which indicates a pitch without any 'unevenness'.

Would say Roach's length has been his problem. Rampaul has bowled well so far, but Azhar Ali has been impressive, he has an uncomplicated style about him.
