Australian Discussion (Final Squad Announced Post #82)

Nate

You'll Never Walk Alone
Not sure why I feel compelled to embrace my sorrows...

Why Australia's Squad will bomb out of the World Cup

Ricky Ponting - Coming back from an injury. Was in horrendous form all summer, looked scratchy despite the scores in the warm-ups. Pushing way too hard at the ball. FAILURE

Michael Clarke - Still hasn't corrected his technique and footwork. Gets stuck between occupying the crease and belting everything. Will run-out himself and a team-mate. At least once. Will probably make runs at some point to kill my life. MEH

Doug Bollinger - Y so tired? Can't seem to sustain his pace throughout a game. Has invaluable experience in India. Will pick up key wickets while going for runs. MEH

Callum Ferguson - Lost his penis in the backyard. Will make runs though. SUCCESS

Brad Haddin - Australia's funny man will make a bunch of low scores and have one or two successes, struggling early on. Will be flawless behind the stumps. MEH

John Hastings - Relatively untested. Canny with his cutters. Don't think he'll be horrible, but he won't pick up many wickets and will most likely be dropped after the World Cup. FAILURE

Dave Hussey - Would rather have Precambrian in the middle order. What a stupid selection. Can bowl offies though, my bad. FAILURE

Mitchell Johnson - Spare me. Offers nothing on Indian wickets. Had a terrible summer. Will somehow gun it the entire tournament. SUCCESS

Jason Krejza - Has all the tools to succeed in the spinner's role. Key will be consistency and changes of pace. By all reports is a bit of a knob. May well prove me wrong. But won't. FAILURE

Brett Lee - Will be the only good thing about our World Cup. Please don't get injured Brett. Or I'll injure you. SUCCESS

Tim Paine - Nerves will get the better of him I reckon. Will get caught on the crease and edge a few behind. FAILURE

Steve Smith - The opposite of Paine. Backs himself, won't get scared on the big occasion. Will make quick runs, take wickets, field like Rhodes and make passionate love to TumTum's sister. SUCCESS

Shaun Tait - What a muppet. Can't bowl in India. Might pwn an associate n00b or two. Will withdraw from the tournament halfway through with menstruation issues. FAILURE

Shane Watson - Is it too much to ask him to carry us again? Think it's time for him to fail unfortunately. His bowling will be ineffective in Indian conditions. MEH

Cameron White - Reckon he'll come up with the goods. Could well be our leading run-scorer. Can't go worse than when he played as a specialist bowler frbs. SUCCESS

Verdict - Will scrape our way through to the semis before finally being eliminated. It will be a World Cup to forget for Australia, with massive questions asked about Ricky Ponting's place in the Australian Team.

I disagree with a lot of this, but :laugh:. Gun post.

Virat Kohli (c)
Hussey's hamstring was never going to get up; he ripped the thing off the bone. Guys miss months with that normally, and of course he's disappointed because he's probably the second keenest cricketer in the history of the world (after Andy Bichel, but it's a close run thing). The Muss would be the knight from Monty Python, he'd keep on insisting that he's fine till he died.
Haha so good.

Interesting post that from Nnanden but I largely don't agree with most of it, infact these are my thoughts on our squad.

Haddin : Would make a lot of outlandish 20's and 30's but would largely be a failure with the bat, behind the sticks he would be decent and would also do good job of stirring a batsman or two...

Watson : I think he would be a huge disappointment in this worldcup, he comes into the worldcup as arguably world's best ODI cricketer and the weight of expectations are likely to get the better of him on this big stage, though I still expect him to play an important role with the ball in the middle overs.

Ponting : Expecting Ponting to score more runs than any other batsman in this worldcup, it might seem pretty unrealistic atm but he is champion player and I can see him doing what he does best, which is leading the side from the front. Ponting came into the warm-up games with virtually no cricket under his belt against decent attacks and still ended up scoring runs and that should be ominous signs for the rest of the teams.

Clarke : Expecting Clarke to a play a big but a less fashionable role, he probably is likely to bat in a low profile manner and muster runs at consistent rate through the tournament allowing rest of the players to bat around him.

White and Hussey : Both of them are identical players imo, they both plant their front-foot forward and throw their hands at the ball. Would be our impact players if the wickets are flat and true but if the wicket is slow then they would have a torrid time.

Smith : His batting just isn't international standard yet, doesn't know how to build an innings or bat at #7. Would be a genuine wicket taking option if used properly but I can't see that happening therefore can see him going down as bit of waste.

Ferguson: Can't see him getting much game time, but ideally would like to see him bat at #6 and Hussey at #7, he has it in him to score consistent runs that too at a fair clip and that would make-up for Mussey's absence to a certain extent.

Johnson : He is going to be a disaster and the worst part is that I can see him playing pretty much all the games regardless of how badly he bowls, hopefully they utilise him as a pinch-hitting batting all-rounder because that's his best utilization atm.

Krezja : Can be surprise package of the worldcup if Ponting attacks with him but he won't be nothing short of an epic fail if he is asked to do a holding job becuase all he is gonna do then is bowl long hops.

Lee : Will lead our attack well only if we use him smartly, likely to do most damage with new ball and the middle overs but if we try him at the death against good teams then he would leak serious amount of runs.

Tait : Don't think he should bowl with the new ball unless their is swing on offer. He would be much more effective as a shock bowler if he bowls with a semi-new and old ball, if we do that than he would be a real handful.

Hastings : He would bring certain amount of control to our attack, out of our squad he is probably the most suited bowler to these conditions can see him doing a tidy job as well as chipping in with some handy wickets, also he would be worth a try during the death overs.

Bollinger: I doubt he is a 100% atm and that is something that could really hurt his performances right through this tournament, but given the crazy schedule of the worldcup likes of Dougeh and Tait would get plenty of time for some R&R and a fully fit Dougeh could play a huge part in us winning the worldcup.

Paine : Last and certainly the least is Timmy Paine, what can I say... I guess he would do a good job mixing the drinks....

So all in all this team still has potential to go all the way but like most teams their are some issues regarding form and team balance, though that doesn't mean the Australian team has reached desperate station.

^^^ More on the money for mine, although I have more faith in Watson. His technique seems well suited to the conditions, so I think he'll do OK. He'll at least get a few fifties.

White is a big worry. #5 is a rather important position. Mind you, his last innings told us basically nothing of use as to where he's at.

i honestly believe aus would have a much better chance in this wc if clarke and not ponting was captain.

I think more than our bowling its really our fragile batting line-up that can cost us this worldcup, but Ponting coming back into the side will go a long way in strengthening the batting line-up.

If he leads the side from the front and scores runs at the top of the order then suddenly the whole batting line-up looks a lot stronger, Clarke might have the tactical acumen but at present he certainly doesn't have Ponting's pedigree as a leader.

Yeah I must say that Ponting back at #3 - a position where we didn't manage a single fifty all series against England, the top score being Ferguson's 40-odd by an alarming amount - with Ferguson in the wings makes life a whole lot better.

White/Dussey/Smith is still making me very very nervous though. Lot of pressure on the top four to fire.
