An outstanding innings from Yousuf Pathan. There is no way Ravindra Jadeja is going to make the World Cup squad now, surely. A word on Daniel Vettori : he was so graceful in the post-match presentation, hats off to the dude.

On a sidenote, is anyone else miffed at Ravi Shastri for speaking to Yousuf Pathan in English ?

Franklin!

Once again though, not much to write home about with the rest of the performance. I think this series is demonstrating that McKay isn't much good - not in limited overs anyway.

Jimmeh Franklin 98*:-O
Jimmeh! Great to see him go well with the bat. His two highest ODI scores in consecutive innings, I think! However, reading the cricinfo commentary, it appears he was plumb Lbw early and not given, and dropped twice on his way to 98*, so it could easily have all gone pear-shaped for him.

Gah, can't believe we lost this! Went to bed when the score was about 120/4 after 25 overs, with Vettori and McCullum causing havoc, thinking it was a done deal. Ugghh.

Hm i would have to disagree. He looked like a completely different player out there. He was calm and confident and in the last over smashed like 20 (with a massive as six)

Does anyone now want to question Nathan McCullum's credentials to be in the ODI side as an off spinner and lower order blaster? He's proving himself more and more in this series, to go with some very dynamic fielding.

Yeah i must admit i had my doubts but it was slightly justified i mean he hadn't taken a wicket before this game.

Let's see a bunch of tools try and protect Daniel Vettori's captaincy after this performance. How anyone can say he's a good captain after watching him lose despite setting 317 is beyond me, his bowler rotation, field settings and even his own bowling was utter crap.

I can only hope that Franklin continues to show his stuff at international level, because his experience in the county scene and experience captaining Wellington would definitely come in handy when people realise Vettori is now nothing more than a ODI specialist with his bowling and a batsman in tests.
I think suggesting Franklin as a potential captain is rather ridiculous. Not only is his place in the side not secure (yes, hopefully that may change) but he is still one of the biggest confidence-based performers with the worst body language going around. Not something you want in a captain.

I see him as performing the middle overs role, clogging up an end and every now and again he's going to take you a two to three wicket bag - he's not there to rip out a team, if he can average a 1/35 or 1/40 type bowling performance then he's doing his job, cause he also adds some late order hitting power and seems to be getting better and better as a batsman.

Yeah, he needs to establish himself in the team first. Look at his body language in the domestic circuit, he knows he's king there and if he can bring that mentality into his international play, that'll be the same.

Of course he's going to be tentative at the moment, having been in and out of this side so many times over the last few years.

Well if he can get another score in the next game then he will be going along way to cementing his place for a while at least. It's a shame about his bowling though.

His List A record actually isn't that great so i think hes still a useful test match bowler.

I think Franklin is targeting himself as the fifth bowling option in test cricket. By including Vettori and Franklin in your line up, you should be able to select 3 other bowlers every week.

This is the team I'd select after the world cup for tests

1. McIntosh
2. McCullum
3. Williamson
4. Taylor
5. Ryder
6. Franklin
7. Watling (k)
8. Vettori
9. Southee (SeamPitch) / NcCullum (SpinPitch)
10. Wagner
11. Martin/McKay/Bennett

Ignoring the Watling keeping thing for a minute (and Nathan McCullum as a Test option - blekh), I agree. I'd probably change the order though and go with:

6 Vettori
7 Franklin
8 Keeper

As I said during the Tests, though, imagine an alternate universe when McCullum can average high 30s or more opening the batting and keep wicket without rooting his back. How awesome would a 4-8 of:

4 Taylor
5 Ryder
6 Williamson
7 Vettori
8 Franklin

.. be?

Never going to happen though obviously. *stops dreaming*

Jono

Virat Kohli (c)
An Indian 2nd XI with Gambhir. Kohli and Yuvraj failing chased down 317.

Incredible. Great win. NZ should be disappointed with their performance after the rain break.

P.s, Prince, as much as you hate people referring to the IPL, no one here gave up faith because they saw what Yusuf could do, even when 9 rpo off 10+ overs is required.

Obviously don't select players, or even judge players, solely on IPL. List A is important... But everyone here knew what Yusuf was capable of because of his Rajasthan Royals performances.

I think you will find McCullum will get his average up over 40 in the next twelve months or so but yeah that 4-8 looks really good we just need a solid opener to partner Brendon(any ideas? Raval?) and I'll give Guptill the number 3 slot for the time being (i actually liked Flynn but he failed so many times after a good start). McCullum, Taylor, Ryder, Williamson all should average 40+ which would be a first for a NZ team.

Lol in the bowling department i actually wouldn't have a clue. Wagner, yes ok but other than that no one really stands up. Hopefully the young guys like Milne can develop over the next year or so with some experience under their belt and with Shane Bond's help.

I won't go into the whole keeping thing again

Meh, I think the fact that before today he had four List A tons and a strike rate of over 120 was just as much of an indication that he was capable of this as his IPL performances. Picking players on what they're capable of rather than what they're likely to do is a recipe for disaster anyway.

I'm not saying they should be totally discounted anyway; I'm just saying they should be wholly secondary. It makes me sad inside when the first question someone asks when trying to get a handle on the quality of a player is "How did he go in the IPL?" as if it's the best pointer. That's all I was saying before.

I asked that about Tiwary earlier because people are more likely to have seen him playing in the IPL than anywhere else.
