It is not just the storylines - the matches themselves are boring. A John Cena match is so freaking predictable : he starts off well, gets beaten up, does a five knuckle shuffle, attitude adjustment, pinfall.
We should not be comparing the WWE with TNA; the former has always been a couple of classes above. But, the PG rating has undeniably made a difference to the show : the verbal battles, which used to be the life and soul of the successful attitude era, are almost non-existent; the diva matches are far less interesting. Heck, even names of moves/superstars have had to be changed : FU to attitude adjustment, legend killer to viper, stfu to stf.
Just out of curiosity, how long have you guys been watching WWE ? If you think the Nexus storyline is great, I can only imagine that you have seen little, if anything, of the WWF attitude era.
Most of the guys on this thread are very smart, intelligent and rational pro wrestling fans. In fact, I can say that this thread is one of the best, most well rounded and intelligent wrestling discussion threads on the entire internet.
Most of us have been fans of pro wrestling (not just WWE) since the early 90's and yes most of us were around during the height of the Attitude Era. Just go back on the several hundred pages of this thread and you'll get a feel of what sort of discussion takes place.
We all appreciate a good promo, we all appreciate solid, well constructed wrestling matches and yes we all appreciate John Cena as well because he is very talented! The Nexus storyline to quote Chris Jericho has been a stroke of genius, because never before in the history of pro wrestling have 7 green guys been pushed so fast and so hard to the main event yet have been so believable in their spot.
Think about the Nexus storyline in the sense that you didn't know a single one of these people this time last year. You didn't know Wade Barrett, you didn't know Justin Gabriel or David Otunga. Most people didn't even know Daniel Bryan unless you followed ROH and the Independent Wrestling scene like a lot of the people here do.
Now you know all of them. Wade Barrett is a certified superstar and the other guys are pretty recognisable too. Sheamus and Drew McIntyre have come leaps and bounds and Alberto Del Rio is a future World Heavyweight Champion. For all the criticism that internet fans tend to give WWE, I think they have been doing a fantastic job.
They don't have to go to the lengths they did with the Attitude Era, as it's been done before. Times change, viewing tastes change. The classy, family friendly way the WWE is presenting their programming is fantastic. The way they are also putting the sport back into sports entertainment with the likes of Daniel Bryan, Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler is fantastic too and only makes the product stronger.
Are they doing everything perfectly? Most likely not. Can they improve? Absolutely they can improve. It's important to note though that the WWE are in a transition period with most of their older stars now retiring or taking breaks. The young talent they currently have is absolutely amazing and in a few years, WWE will be able to enjoy some of the rewards for pushing these younger stars.
