I was thinking though, do any other sports have all their play-by-play called by former players? Players who go into the box are going to be less inclined to do research than a John Motson or a Barry Davies aren't they? Understandable really and it's obvious why cricket lends itself to such commentary.
At least in New Zealand, currently the "play-by-play" rugby commentary tends to be exclusively called by non-former players, with the "expert" or sideline comments almost exclusively by former players. Ditto football. Personally find that for those sports I've mentioned the former players are mostly up to the mark in terms of commentary and some of the non-former players (Grant Nisbett in particular) make the most errors.

well tbf to the fat idiot, he didn't say Siddle was the better bowler. He was just worried about fitness.

Disappointed about the cricket not being shown on Gem, mainly because it'd be the perfect vehicle to continue showing the cricket on when they have to go to the News.

Taylor commentates like we are dummies. We aren't idiots Mark, try to treat us with the respect we deserve, or we will turn over to Kerry O'Keefe and Jim Maxwell on the radio.

You guys have it comparatively easy. Every time I want to see India play I have to listen to Laxman Sivaramatw*tface. The worst commentator on the planet. Or Harsha Bhogle, who I like to think of as a poor man's Mark Nicholas; and I despise Mark Nicholas.

Best commentator around I reckon for the last few years has been Ian Bishop. Very thoughtful analysis, but can crank up the excitement level when appropriate.
