I can't believe I ate the whole thing
See? Maybe, just maybe, those of us in the television industry have half a clue?

Agree. There was some discussion about this here earlier in the year (see below).Considering he hasn't even got a provincial contract... Even though I am a ND supporter I'd say Beard is the next best spinner in NZ, and he showed that with some good performances in Zimbabwe and on the Emerging Players tour.
Howsie said:[about Beard] He'll play for New Zealand within the next year IMO, rate him bloody highly. I reckon he's a better spinner then Patel already too, not like that means much though.
vandem said:Don't think so, unless Vettori is injured. In next year we have tours to SL (ODI) then Bang (ODI/test) and India (ODI/test) (unless India reschedule us to 20-never... and replace us with some T20 stuff), then home vs Pak in Dec/Jan then World Cup.
IMHO selectors won't punt on Beard as a 2nd spinner in the sub-continent, will take McCullum for ODI stuff, take Patel to Bang where he'll do well enough to be picked for India. Then back home only 1 spinner is needed. So Beard be a victim of timing, will need to wait until after a 2nd first class season to move up the pecking order ...
Well Bangladesh played like 3 left arm spinners and we all know how they did...Agree. There was some discussion about this here earlier in the year (see below).
If I was a selector I'd be picking the best two spinners in the test squad, even if they are both left armers. But IMHO the most competitive chance for NZ is to hope for enough bounce / reverse swing to pick three seamers + Vettori + part-timers Williamson + Ryder.
Doubt it.Is Williamson likely to play ahead of Guptill?
Is there a warm up game on this tour? I was going to say that this might make the decision but I can't seem to find reference to one on cricinfo? Is Williamson likely to play ahead of Guptill?
Welcome to CW.Doubt it.

No there isn't one, and there's not really that much time before the first match anyway. Would probably have been better for the players who were in the Bangladesh squad to make their way directly to India and begin preparing. They need it.Is there a warm up game on this tour? I was going to say that this might make the decision but I can't seem to find reference to one on cricinfo?
Warm ups? In this day and age? No way.Is there a warm up game on this tour? I was going to say that this might make the decision but I can't seem to find reference to one on cricinfo?
Was thinking the same thing. While i'd like to see Williamson there, I think Guptill does have a lot to offer in the future so i'm not entirely disappointed if that is the route they take. I'd prefer Arnel or Bennett over Martin though.Doubt it.

I agree, but I think the selectors have stuck by Martin long enough to suggest that they will continue to do so. It will be in the best interests of everyone if he retires thoughArnel Southee and Martin are the incumbents. I hope the selectors take that into account. And Southee is our future so he is the first that should be in. He needs to learn and grow. IF there are any question marks it should be over Martin.
Thought provoking post.Brent Arnel might become a victim of the hunt for young bowling talent imo. Southee, McKay, Bennett and possibly others might always be ahead of him because the selectors may think he's just another 30 year old domestic medium fast bowler. Martin is the one who is seen as the old hand to guide the youngsters through.
You ****en' betcha he will. Now that people are finally jumping on my "Martin sux lolz" wagon, he's so going to take 6 wickets in the first innings.
