Both Katich and Watson average 50+ as openers. Not sure I'd touch them/move them around.

Well well well....that was some action on the 4th day.

Sachin is still out there....i would really bet on an Indian win here but for sure a huge test for the best batting line up in the world this....

Have you been there? Makes the Mumbai traffic look like a stroll in the countryside. Went there a couple years back...worst decision ever.

Expensive as **** too, and full of new moneyed trash.

Hooray, North must now be history

Katich averages 53.15 from 30 Tests as Opener and Watson avearges 50.95 from 13 Tests as Opener, while together they have an opening stand average of 54.50, which is the 3rd best average in Australian Test history....not bad for a pair of midle order batmen...

...the reason I say all this is that I am fed up with Ponting batting at # 3 and Clarke has not really flourished since moving up to # 4 (averages 26.16), so I want Watto to be an agressive number 3, while a genuine opener Hughes opens with Katich, however the records above indicate that I may have a losing argument....

....so I'll switch to Australia must bring in Smith for the Ashes, so why not blood him in the next Test where his agressive batting and spin bowling offer a nice option....

....nah, make me a selector and I'll name the following next test, for the good of Australia regaining the number 1 rating:

1. Hughes
2. Katich
3. Watson
4. Ponting
5. Clarke
6. Hussey

This should also give Watto more rest between innings so he can bowl more :)

Well, if you would make Watto bat 4, then it would help the rest argument.. 1 down is not always ideal for a bit of rest...

Personally, I think Ponting's problems have less to do with technique or age or anything unrecoverable. They seem to be mental, and although he shows he's still got the stuff...as someone said earlier he keeps finding ways to get himself out. A bit of good form and then I'll bet he'll return to his frightening best.

Also, he's pretty much said "over my dead body" over being replaced at #3.

Another captivating day of Test cricket with the initiative continuing to to and fro. Watson really led the way early on with his positive approach, but was enticed into trying to pull a ball from way outside the off stump, due the off-side heavy field that was set.

From then on Australia lost their way, not sure whether to attack or grind it out, in the light of some very decent bowling from India, even Ishant Sharma found something like a bit of form, when he managed to keep his front foot behind the line.

Ponting's dismissal may not have come as a surprise in that he fell to the pull shot again, but when he saw the field that was set, I thought he would apply his strategy to combat this much more sensibly than falling for it.

Then when Australia were behind the 8-ball, Hilfenhaus snares three late important wickets to set up a fascinating last day. Australia probably slight favourites, but with Tendulkar in, Dhoni and potentially Laxman to come it is by no means in the bag and will probably swing both ways numerous times on day five.

Hughes is yet to prove he can overcome the weakness which pretty much every bowler in the world knows about. You can't drop someone for something then pick them again without having rectified the thing for which they were dropped for.

Next man up is Klinger. Fair is fair.

Sorry, it's Hughes or Smith...Klinger will have to wait for the Ashes ;)

It's not impossible, but it is definitely rare, for someone at his age to come back to their best.

His pull shot has been getting him out too often and he seems very stubborn about not removing it. I think this is a mistake - other players have temporarily shelved certain shots if it keeps getting them out.

No way for us to know whether the deterioration is mental, or age, or both, but he needs to sort himself out fairly quickly. He's what, 9 centuries behind Sachin? So he needs to start getting a bit of a move on if he wants to catch him. I don't see him dropping down the order either.
