Yeah, having Imran in the side is no doubt more useful than having a bowler of his calibre (who can't bat), or a batsman of his calibre (who can't bowl). But whether it's more useful than having a better batsman (who can't bowl) is highly debatable.
Of course Imran was exceptional. In case of 'not that great' all-rounders, my point becomes more valid. For example, I'll prefer a Kevin Pietersen over an Andrew Flintoff at no. 6 more often than not (if I already have 4 genuinely good bowlers).
Everything depends on situations though. If your top 5 is amazing, and your bowling isn't top-class then an all-rounder helps. If you have 4 great bowlers, then you mightn't need one.
