How Good is Tamim?

What has happened to Naeem Islam? He made 59* in his last Test match, he could be an option surely with the bat.
Really, really dire in the tour games in England. Don't really rate him much as a Test prospect anyway - if they need someone to bat eight, slap dingers and bowl darts in ODIs then he's the man but his bowling would (should, anyway) be completely irrelevant in Tests and I don't think he has the game to play regular Test innings of substance... and I saw that 59* as well.

Even though he was dire in the tour games (I wasn't aware of this FTR) it shouldn't really make Ashraful suddenly jump ahead of him after scoring a couple of half centuries in a tour match, should it?

I wouldn't mind Mahmudullah up at 4 and have Naeem, Shakib and Rahim from 6 to 8.

Haha yeah not saying Ashraful should be ahead of him at all; just don't really hold out much hope for him. I'd rather see Nafees, Nazimuddin or Rajin in the team. Same goes for Alok Kapali once he actually scores a run domestically.

I thought that Rahim had the best technique of all the Bangla batsmen

Problem is that he's only 21 and certainly not ready to be a 4 or 5

Bat him at say 7 and let him develop over time as he looked potentially a pretty good player to me

I really don't think any of Mahmudullah, Rahim or Shakib should be batting lower than seven. They only seem to bat low because they have other responsibilities too (bowling, wicket keeping, captaincy) but they should really be the 5/6/7 if not the 4/5/6. If it means having a specialist batsman at eight then so be it IMO.

He's got a good tech-neek, but I don't like all these airy-fairy shots he plays.. I'd like to have seen him play in my day, on those ooncovered pee-ches.. Then we'll see if he can really bat

I like this logic, if only for this. Sinclair the second best #3 in the world - indeed. Made my day.

Frankly I think determining who's the best "right now" merely via the use of short-term form is very, very flawed. Tamim would probably be lucky to make my top ten openers (although I do tend to put a lot more emphasis on First Class cricket than most so I imagine that'd be different for a lot of people). He's been good but playing well for a year doesn't make you one of the best batsmen in the world.

Fair to say he was indeed # 3 for those 12 months right?

If I said Lee wasn't one of the top 3 bowlers during 2007-08 I'd be joking, regardless of his mediocre till then.

Two centuries outside SC is no joke for an Asian player. He may not be able to sustain his game for a long time though. You will see many more failures with his style of play than successes.

He's made a good early case to become the first Bangladeshi in the Wisden Five though, I reckon.

It's funny that how some people and pundits overrate Finn based on his showings against a below average team in his hometown and in another when conditions were in favor of him and then they write off Tamim as the flavour of the month when he's done something equally good or better against a decent opposition than Finn has managed. Apples and oranges but if I have a choice between them I'd take Tamim.

I think this is simply because Finn performances could mean more to the cricketing world as England are one of the better teams and a player like Finn having the potential to knock off another good teams top order and therefore England winning a series against say Australia in Australia excites the public a little more than a brilliant innings by a Bangladesh batsman who ends up being on the losing team again.

FTR, I think they are both exciting, Tamim is more proven at this stage tho.

I think people in England have been excited by Tamim, he was the main story of the series and quite rightly so.

Finn is a completely seperate issue, but we certainly have reason to be optimistic, many decent county bowlers who have never been short of international quality have taken loads of wickets against weaker sides but I think it is fairly obvious that that is not the case with Finn. I am not expecting him to win the ashes or anything but I would certainly expect him to become a permanent feature in this side.

Really dissapointed by Tamim's second innings dismissal in the last test. Out hooking in the 7th over even if it was not out. Just seems a foolish shot.
He has gone down somewhat in my estimation purely for that inning.

I hope he learns and becomes more judicious. I think he should be trying to be a balanced player with a wise shot selection strategy. I wonder if he is missing his old coach.
