Bit quiet round here at the minute but I will do you all the service of boring you to tears with my report from last night's House Show, interspersed with pics
I was on Row J and the view was quality, really couldn't complain, except maybe about the kid sat next to me who kept blocking my view of the ramp by waving his replica Big Gold Belt about. Can't get too mad about such enthusiasm though really. Saw one kid with both the WWE & WHC titles draped around his shoulder, bit of trivia for you, you might not know this but back in 2001 Chris Jericho beat both The Rock and Stone Cold in the same night to win those two titles (not quite, but close enough hey).
Anyway, now that you've been sufficiently enlightened.
Show opened with R-Truth coming out, great idea, got the crowd going and he was way over. He was up against Ziggler who I am a bit of a fan of. Dolph was great at getting heat from the kids but I think needs a bit more about him before the whole crowd starts hating him. The match was very good actually, standard heel-face stuff with R-Truth going over but it got the crowd into it.
(Took me a little while to get the camera settings right
)
Second match was Divas, no McCool for some reason so we got Beth V Layla. They didn't bother announcing Layla as being from England (tbf they don't on TV either and I have NFI why, have you heard her accent?!) and she played a really good heel. I was really surprised by this match. Beth is the one diva who can put on a decent match generally but Layla was much better than I expected, doing the cowardly heel routine but also getting some decent offence. I was expecting the divas to be the dud of the night for me but tbh it was watchable.
Next up was the Hart Dynasty against Croft and Barreta. The Dudebusters came out first and got some nice cheep heel heat by saying that they had heard there was a big football rivalry in Manchester but that it didn't matter because Chelsea owned them both. Pop from me for that tbh. They then went on to see that it was called soccer and a stupid game anyway. Harts got a decent pop, and Smith played up to his status as son of the most popular British wrestler of all-time by completely apeing his moveset. Decent match as you'd expect from these, finished with the Hart Attack (I think) for the pin.
Then we had Luke Gallows V Finlay. A lot of the kids popped big for Finlay's music then realised it wasn't Hornswoggle. Gallows and Serena got a lot of heat, and Gallows cut a routine "straight edge means I'm better than you" promo. The match was meh, Finlay got the win when he managed to hit Gallows with his cane while the ref wasn't looking. Punk then ran down for a beatdown which brought out Rey to a mother****ing pop hey. This was nice, got the crowd eager for the semi-main later in the night.
Last match before intermission was Shad V Kane, you all know I don't really care for those type of big men, it was impressive for what it was but it was just before intermission and I'd had a couple of pints so my mind was, erm, in the toilet, possibly not for the first or last time
I came back from intermission just in time for Drew McIntyre getting on the mic. I'm glad I never missed it because he was absolute gold:
Drew said:
When I was young, like most British families we would go on holiday to Spain. But one year, my parents brought me on holiday to Manchester. When I realised where we were, I thought I must have done something wrong. Everyone knows that this town is chav central!
He went on to say that England was devoid of sporting heroes, citing John Terry as an example and said he would represent all of Britain as our new hero.
He went on to have a really good match with Matt Hardy for the IC title. You knew who the winner would be but they did a great job of making us think Matt would take it, before Drew managed to end it with his futureshock DDT.
Matt was carried out by the refs and there was a "we want Jeff" chant going round which was a bit harsh. Watch Bravo and see the great stuff Jeff's up to lately
Next up was CM Punk V Rey Rey. Punk got great heat although he had his fans, plenty of people with 'Pepsi Plunge' signs and what not. He didn't get on the mic which was a shame on the face of it, but he didn't need to. He took about five minutes getting to the ring, just got in everyone over 18's face on the front row, absolutely brilliant. Rey Rey's pop was off the charts, absolutely immense. There were a lot of kids in attendance but even so, the man was ****ing over, easily the most popular wrestler of the night. As an aside, his masks were £40 on the merch stand and there were tonnes of kids getting their folks to buy them them so the royalty cheques are even prettier than I imagined for Rey. Those of you who read this thread a lot will know I am a big fan of the guy, a big fan of both guys.
Check Punk squaring up to someone in the front row on this one:
The match itself was AMAZING. What their Mania match should have been I guess as it ran a fair amount of time. Can't possibly do it any justice by recapping anything that happened, I just hope they get time at Extreme Rules to showcase this sort of match. It was the second best match I've seen this year, behind only Taker-HBK at Mania. Bear in mind I've pretty much seen every Raw, Smackdown, ECW, NXT and most Impacts this year, as well as all of the PPVs, it's not a statement I'm making lightly. Rey Rey got the win via 619 to an enormous reaction. My favourite snap of the night is below.
Finally the main event was Jericho V Edge V Swagger. Bret Hart was the outside enforcer. Jericho got on the mic and did his totally awesome routine, called Manchester a crappy little town to great applause from me and ran down Bret Hart and Edge. Edge got a great pop, Bret's was massive, between him and Rey for pop of the night.
The match was really good, in some ways standard triple threat fare although large chunks just showcased Edge and Jericho with Swagger playing possum. Swagger retained, he chucked Edge out of the ring after he had speared Jericho and covedred Jericho for the win.
Jericho had beaten on Bret during the match but managed to escape at the end. The crowd obviously weren't going to go home unhappy though, Edge speared Swagger and then brought Bret in to put Swagger in the sharpshooter to a huge pop, a nice end to the show and Bret really soaked up the ovations as he walked out.
