This is such a piss poor bowling line-up it isn't funny. Chris Martin's finished, Tim Southee hasn't improved in two years of international cricket and if anything he has gone backwards. Darryl Tuffey's been mid 120's all day, nuff said, and Brent Arnel has been steady but doesn't really look all that promising,

You really have problems when you play four seamers and the quickest one of the lot is 135K.
I thought you were an advocate for Southee.

At the risk of incurring Heath's wrath, and as much as I love them, it tells out a lot about Shane Bond and Iain O'Brien who abandoned the team before a very important series. Bond complained about his constant injuries and is now playing IPL, and O'Brien decided to go ahead and move to England. Couldn't they have just got through this series and then gone their seperate ways? O'Brien making a deal with his wife that as soon as the second Test is over he would be on the next plane to London.

Then again maybe he tried and it didn't work.

Bond is perfectly understandable. He's got 2 years tops of cricket left in him, and he wants to make the most of it. Three of the last 4 test series that he's played in (Pak in 09, SA in 07 and WI in 06), have led to injuries that have meant he's spent long periods on the sidelines. Why would he want to risk that before a major money spinner like the IPL, when he has so little earning time left?

O'Brien is a bit more difficult to justify. The only thing I can think of is that his wife might've given him an ultimatum, and he sadly came down on her side.

Nah, I agree with you Craig. I cannot fathom why Bond & O'Brien wouldn't have done all they could to be playing at home against the Aussies - probably the biggest Test matches we get here, and a real rarity it seems.

Maybe the answer is that they did try everything to play? It doesn't seem too harsh on Bond seeing as he'd stayed relatively injury free for a couple of years, and as soon as he plays a test, he breaks down again. O'Brien... Well, I suspect Bahnz is spot on.

This bowling line up is total ****e. The sad thing is, I don't think a single one of the seamers would be in Australia's 3rd string attack - let alone 2nd string.

Play of the day goes to that legendary streak.

Beautifully side step to get past security, then has the balls to take the boundary fence on the fly, then scampers up the seating, over the fence and out of the ground.

Oh, and Clarke played OK too. :p

Struggling to understand the point of this post tbh. Is this the same series where the Windies went winless?
At least we got a draw and went within 20 runs of taking the last test, all that with a depleted team in Australia's backyard, lets see if NZ can even get a draw in this series!! :p .

Be careful, your starting to sound dangerously like a troll here.

What do you mean "troll"? what i said was actually facts, just because you might not agree with it doesn't mean i'm "trolling", honestly that line is getting extremely tedious now and is way passed it's sell by date 8-) .

You say this and yet at the same time you advocate the introduction of another 19 year old into the side under the "if he's good enough, he's old enough" clause.

Martin and Arnel both bowled well today. Tuffey is toothless, and I couldn't believe Vettori gave him the second new ball, but it's not like anyone else is banging down the door. And Southee still probably shouldn't have played any international cricket yet, given that he's 21. He's not ready, but he's the only bowler available who can appreciably swing it, which offers a crucial point of difference in this otherwise virtually identical bowling attack.

To be honest, I was quietly pleased until it all turned to **** in the last hour and a half.
And?

Tim Southee hasn't improved since coming into international cricket, what's that got to do with wanting Williamson in the team? Southee ever since coming into domestic cricket has been one of the better bowlers going around, so he deserved his shot. But even if he struggled to begin with you'd still like to see development in his game, something I don't think has happened.

His pace hasn't really increased all that much (in test match cricket anyway as he always seems to be able to bowl 3/4 overs in one day cricket at 138+) He's lost his ability to swing it both ways, heck he's even lost his consistant outswinger with the new ball.

I really think Daniel Vettori's captaincy is to blame in some respects, he really gives Tim Southee a very short leash and if he goes for a few four's early on he's taken off right away.
