Hurrh, Bennett and McClenaghan?
Sure was. I actually had to laugh though. You have the "bowling experts" in here saying they're rubbish because they have poor stats, yet we have two guys that have both played them, have tons of FC experience and in Styris's case played international cricket rating them as the next group of fast bowlers that should be picked after O'Brien, Bond and Martin retire.

Yeah sure lets pick them now, you're right Howsie. When they're picked no doubt you'll be vindicated, espcially since a couple of internationals said so.

Give 'em a run against Umar Akmal imo.

 How many times have you actually even seen them bowl?

It's likely Arnel will debut against Bangers since he's contracted, hopefully alongside Southee and Tuffey.
If they play 4 seamers and Vettori @ 6, I hope they give one of the above a go in place of Martin.
When you're given a home series against average opposition, it's your best time to give new talent a go. We wouldn't want to waste the opportunity.

Several one day and 20/20 games. More than enough to completely write them off ala Wagner imo eh? :p

I'm fine with Arnel. But seriously, is it too much to ask to let young talent smash over domestic line ups for a little while before being thrown in the deep end? Am I the only one that wants youngsters to prove themselves and experience success (and failure if it occurs) domestically instead of internationally?

Anyone watching the cricketers show right now? Guess who Joey Yovich and Scott Styris named as possible replacements for O'Brien in the next few months:

Brent Arnel
Trent Boult
M.......M.......
H........B.......

Where New Zealand, our players just don't have the time to develop in FC cricket sometimes.

Bull****. Ryder was in there for how long? Turned out fine. Iain O'Brien another.

Biggest. Myth. Ever.

More often than not, potential picks with no decent FC background fail epically.

Okay so I ask you this, who are New Zealand's bowlers when Bond, O'Brien and Martin all retire before next summer?

We'll have to see who performs. This is a crucial little period for anyone wanting to earn themselves a test cap.

Arnel, Southee, Tuffey, Vettori are the frontrunners. Trent Boult has been very effective when he's played and Hamish Bennett had a good season last year and has started well this year. Lance Shaw has been consistently top drawer whilst bowling a lot of overs at Eden Park Outer Oval as well, so while he's medium fast he's found ways to get wickets. Kyle Mills on return from injury is another to keep an eye on. There will be others as well but I can't be arsed going in depth.

So assuming we keep Vettori, Tuffey and Southee in the side as part of a five man attack the favourites at this stage would be Arnel and Boult, and I have no issue with either, especially Arnel who has been superb for a while now.

Contradiction much?

Trent Boult's played eight first-class games.

Trent Boult's played eight first-class games.
And has a year more of FC cricket before all three of Bond, Martin and O'Brien are gone. If he carries on current form, he'll walk in. Unlike many of his competitors, right from the get go he's bowled well domestically.

Plus in reply to your previous question I replied with "We'll have to see who performs. This is a crucial little period for anyone wanting to earn themselves a test cap."

If Boult falls away and someone else shines, then there's a definitive case for that bowler to be picked instead of Boult.

At this point its all very theoretical, and Yovich and Styris replies to the interviewer reflect this. No one can say at this time who will replace the three retirees.

At this stage some are more likely than others though.

So you have no problem with them naming Arnel and Boult as possible replacements, but they're wrong about the others? That's what it kind of sounds like tbh.

Brandon Hiini's having a decent season so far, yet he doesn't get a mention [from anyone other than me]. He's a typical New Zealand seam selection; not great pace, but he's very accurate, restricts the scoring and can bat too.

Arnel a definite yes as a prospective replacement for O'Brien (though Bond will come in I imagine so he'll have to wait another test for Bond to injure himself).

If (notice the if) Boult keeps going as he does then yes.

Bennett needs to show some consistency because unlike Boult, he's had both good and bad times in FC, mostly bad but a promising season last year means if he can back it up his name deserves to be considered.

McClenaghan, as potentially devastating as he is, needs to start backing up the huge expectation that imo has been unfairly placed on his shoulders so early in his career and start taking truckloads of wickets. He has some catching up to do if he wants to get his name in with the others.

Haven't seen him play.

You generally have an eye for a bowler though (O'Brien) so he sounds handy. Has a decent record and has been complimented by one of the domestic contributors on here (either Sinclair or McClenaghan liked him).

I have a pretty decent record of spotting talented cricketers and earmarking them for future success. My main failure would be Will Jefferson in recent times. Some guys you can tell will make it from the first time you see them play (Taylor & Ryder being two).
