**Official** Pakistan in New Zealand (3 tests)

It's always the way with medium-fast-based attacks or even attacks that are similar in general. It only takes one game of them not doing particularly well as a unit before the FBC members come out of the woodwork and start complaining about the lack of fire-power or - my personal favourite - the "sameness" of the attack.

An attack like this does just give off the vibe of being toothless when things aren't going well, but I'm yet to be convinced that these sort of attacks are any less effective in terms of actual results than attacks with more variety and/or 'firepower', assuming the same general quality of the bowlers. It certainly seems that way when you're watching it, but I think it's a natural bias - when an attack with a genuine quick in it or several different types of bowlers is ineffective for an innings, people just write it off as a bad day and move on purely on the aesthetics and feel of the game, but it happens all the time. If New Zealand had picked a bunch of tearaway bowlers and a leg spinner and they got belted, I really doubt many people would be in here saying "what we need is some really accurate, tall medium-fast bowlers who move the ball both ways off the seam and bowl a really tight line on off stump" - but these bowlers have proven to be just as effective over time as tearaway quicks, so if these are the best bowlers (in terms of actual results) you have available, these are the bowlers you should be picking.

It was a horrible selection because whats Flynn doing now? Sucking, like I predicted when he was picked.

Hay might have at least done a Sinclair and unlike Flynn and James Marshall who were picked ahead of him, he'd made batting look easy his whole career. Even if it had been two seasons, it was two seasons of quality as opposed to Flynns one season.
Hay can't even make the Central Districts team now and you think he would have done better then Flynn, news flash the guy was average. The big rumor going around is that he couldn't get it of the square and once people worked him out he was screwd. What was his average for New Zealand A again? Under 20 wasn't it?

Flynn was picked because he had a fairly compact technique that was thought would succeed at test level, he has proven to be a bad choice but it wasn't a horrible selection.

What a fantastic Test series this has been, regardless of how this Test finishes up. Every Test has been edge of the seat stuff for me.

Quite concerned that if Pakistan manage to get a 200-250 run lead which seems very likely at this point, the way Kaneria is bowling at the moment, he could well knock us over on the 5th day.

Will be very interesting to follow Pakistan's progress on their tour of Australia.

Go Test cricket!

It was a horrible selection because he had a middling FC record and from the early days couldn't handle an inswinger, or the 40s.

Hay before being found out by new bowlers could at least have cobbled a Sinclair esuq run before being found out because unlike Daniel Flynn or James Marshall, he's actualy done something for a length of time domestically.

No wait I stand corrected, Flynn and especially Marshall were poor batsmen at the FC level for a length of time.

Yeah, lets judge a player's First Class/Test prospects based on two Twenty20 games because they happened to be on TV.

So in other words, I'm right that you went off him in the Champions League where there were slow speedgun readings? :p

IF he was swinging the ball back in at decent pace as you say, then he should be able to do it again. Shouldn't be written off by any means if he can do that effectively considering the earliest he can legally play international cricket is 2011 anyway.
All I heard from people here was that he was some 145+ left-armer that could swing it back into the right handers and had great control. I watched him play in two games last year and this looked to be the case. I then saw the crap he dished out in India with average pace and very little control, so of course I was disappointed. Now I'm not judging him on two 20/20's because that's ****ing stupid but his "real" record shows he's nothing special like I and so many people were to be believed.

Was the best in the second though.

So you are judging him on 4-8 overs you saw. Coolio
And he tells me off for commenting that McClenaghan never swung the ball in the couple of games I've seen him in.

Paybacks a bitch. Where's the NZ medium pace brigade to come online and pay Howsie a visit?

Yeah. But having seen him bowl live and seeing that he averaged 21 in FC cricket in South Africa I was happily wowed. Looking at his record now it doesn't look as good as we thought it was.

Guys stop fighting ok. its not like they're 500/0. it's just a century partnership on a flat wicket. the bowlers are doing a good job out there. its hasnt been easy but keep faith in our bowlers ok.

ps- flem, great blog mate. keep it coming.
