***Official New Zealand Domestic Season Thread 2009/10

If McIntosh can get into the Black Caps I'd say Pinga stands a chance if he scores as many runs as he did last season.

But Pinga, McIntosh, Cumming and How only really stand a chance to average somewhere around 25-35 with the bat.
Yea but McIntosh only got into the team to begin with because of his "defense" and how he could bat all day. Ingram is just a poor mans Martin Guptill (talent wise) and really isn't going to bring anything to this NZ team.

PInga has put up some massive scores in the last two years. I don't rate him at all but he isn't that far off the rest of the pack.

On another note: Merchant - Test number 3 possibility?

Yet he's done alot more than your ND darlings. Home and away.

He might not be test class but he's certainly a very good FC player and if McIntosh can score test centuries then Ingram certainly can.

Myburgh > Merchant, for mine.
Hmm Merchant has had less opportunity though.

My only issue with both is that they are mercenaries. Merchant less so because he at least has kiwi family but Myburgh and Wagner came here because we're easier to get into than SA.

Elliott to an extent falls into this though didn't he come over here at like 20? He was also a very pedestrian player for a long time and I believe has NZ citizenship.

Except for when Brodie was injured he's been playing at 4-5, and we can't have someone that bats at four play test cricket at three now can we 8-)

BJ Watling?

Watling will be a good player, but atm he's a bit of a project.

I'm under no illusions as to how Pinga will most likely turn out at test level if picked. At best he'll be a flat track bully but he's scored big runs consistently for CD and I admire both him and his teammate Tim Lythe for coming back from personal issues like they did and play FC cricket again (Lythe's considerably tougher though).

He also opened the batting and has come in 5 times this season with less than 50 runs on the board. Certainly isn't hidden down the order, the Parlane's just always get the number 3 spot for some reason.

Personal issues?
Yeah. At our school colours assembly a couple of years back Ingram went into it.

Go check out Lythe's leg. Cancer. Was told he'd never play again. Reluctant to play List A because his leg hampers his fielding and running between wickets.

Project, I could argue he's the best opening batsmen in the country right now. He's been scoring runs for over a year now, he's young and he knows his game very well, I don't see how that's a project?

McIntosh, now that's a project.

So when you argued that Broom couldn't play at three for New Zealand because he bats at four for Otago?

Haven't seen Broom score a century this season opening tbh and Haig is hardly the domestic stalwart that Parlane is.

And I haven't seen Merchant go on and make a big score like Broom did in his first game. I fail to see why batting at four makes it impossible to bat at three in test cricket, Flynn was given that job and he'd hardly done it for ND.

Would like both Merchant and Broom to play at 3 for their domestic sides, but I have a funny feeling Parlane isn't going to budge.

McIntosh, now that's a project.
More like a band aid solution that's been rolling around on the floor for a while and has only a tiny bit of stickyness remaining IMO*

* which at present puts him in a better position than Flynn, Fulton and Elliott then

AWTA - NZ needs openers and number 3s, so the more promising players who want to bat in the top 3 for their domestic sides the better IMO.

That's why am pleased Nicol is now opening for Canterbury and is so far relatively successful. Flynn, Broom and Merchant all batting 3 for domestic sides would be excellent. Also Williamson should work out whether he wants to be NZ's number 3 or number 6.

Couldn't agree more. I'm pretty sure the reason Williamson isn't batting higher up the order is because

- Marshall and Parlane
- Bradburn doesn't want to put to much pressure on him, since he's apparently an all-rounder these days 8-)

Really irks me that he isn't batting at three though, he's a much better batsmen then the two guys that bat ahead of him.

Given Flynn's batting at 3 for New Zealand you'd imagine that Northern Districts would bat him there too which is a further hinderance to Williamson batting up the order, though do tend to agree with your point and would like to see Williamson with a better opportunity to bat higher - in saying that his batting this season so far has been shaky to say the least and I doubt those are the ingredients for a promotion up the order.
