Recoba, one of football's greatest wasters. If he didn't care about his pay packet so much, he might have done so much more. Now he is running around for some crap Greek team.

Was that the game where Salif Diao finished off that amazing team move with a goal? Or was that against Denmark? I forget, but he's another player who tricked everyone into thinking he was actually quite good.

Speaking of Uruguay in that competition, I remember when whilst playing France after Henry had been sent off Recoba took the ball around Barthez and then rushed his shot and booted the ball wide, real head in hands moment for me at the time, as he was probably my favourite player at that stage, would have totally altered the look of the next round as well if he had actually managed to stick it in.
That was against Denmark- great goal that.

This was the final match- France were busy being knocked out by Denmark in the other match, and Uruguay needed a win to go through with Senegal only needing a draw. Senegal came out firing and were 3-0 up by half-time with the help of a despicable El Hadji Diouf (boo hiss) dive.

Uruguay, who had been rather disappointing all tournament, randomly clicked into life in the second half and pulled it back to 3-3 with some awesome goals- Forlan's was the pick. Richard Morales then had an open net to win it in injury time but sent his header over the bar.

The second-half Uruguayan performance was incredible- you got the feeling that if they'd pulled it off they'd have made it to the semis on momentum alone, particularly considering how that side of the draw opened up. But Senegal did well too and went on to knock out Sweden in extra time with a great Henri Camara (remember him?) goal before going out to turkey in the quarters.

I barely missed a kick of that World Cup, and there's probably barely a kick I don't remember from it either.

Was an underated World Cup for mine. A lot of my friends really hated in (Pothas in particular) due to a lot of the good teams going out early one, but it is probably the World Cup I have enjoyed the most in living memory. Following South Korea and Senegal was really exciting, and I was much more amped about England's progress in that tournament than I was in 2006. The whole tournament had such a great atmosphere to it and so many memorable moments. The ones I remember the best were England vs Argentina, probably one of the best performances I have ever seen by an England side. Nesta mysteriously being taken off in the match against South Korea and then Italy being knocked out by Ahn's goal. Henry being sent off against Uruaguay. Matt Holland's long range goal against Cameroon. South Korea beating Portugual and then beating Spain after Jaoquin ran the ball out (haha) and their goal was ruled out. Oliver Khan being a gun the whole way through.......ahhh memories, really enjoyed that tournament.

EDIE: AND NOT TO FORGET, all the goals scored by the awesome Junichi Inamoto, though he never cut it at Arsenal, he'll always be a legend in my eyes for his performance against Russia, WAG.

Sigh, watching this makes me feel rather nostaligic, great highlights package.

The refereeing kinda ruined it for mine. You remember Morientes's goal where the ball never touched the line, but there was also a header ruled out for a non-existent push and the South Korean keeper saved the winning penalty from a foot outside his six-yard box. That's before we even mention Portugal going out to them after being reduced to nine men for no good reason and Italy falling too after having Totti sent off for a "dive". Of all the underdog stories, that one is unique in making me feel bitter to this day.

World Cups tend to peter out a bit in the final stages for me. Less teams involved, matches become rarer, and high-pressure matches usually underwhelm. 1998 was the one I enjoyed most.

Absolutely. Just an incredible tournament all around. As perfect as you'll ever get. Even the Ricky Martin song worked for me.

Haha, Neville.

Wish I didn't work Sundays, epic EPL triple tomorrow night. At least I'll get to catch Liverpatto v Man Smitteh.

International Regular
Had one bet this week, Everton half time United full time, into City half time Liverpool full time. 675 to 1. Heard it here first.

Norwood's on Fire
And I'm withdrawing from the race for the SWA hotseat.

Though actually, it's been that bloody long, I probably am in with a shout. Think I'll give fatty a ring.

That Japan v Russia game was great, remember us watching that at my house. Did not hate it but as often seems to be the case the group stages was the highlight and by the semi's I was bored of all the shocks, loved Ronaldo in that tournament though. Really looking forward to this one, by far the best sporting event.
