***Official New Zealand Domestic Season Thread 2009/10

Sinclair is killing it - 163 not out.

I had a thought a while ago that perhaps one of the reasons the domestic bullies (Sinclair, Papps, Bell, Cumming, Parlane and to some extent Fulton) do so well locally but fail to step up to international level might be because the come to rely overly on familiarity with bowlers. It's a competition with only 6 teams (not arguing there should be more btw) and they face the same bowlers year in, year out. They must pretty much know what's coming out of the bowler's hand before he does and that could be a crutch that they suddenly don't have when facing international bowlers.*

A host of other reasons too obviously... quality... mindset etc.

I also wondered who are the best bowlers in the last year or two against those guys, whether it turns out to be bowlers of decent quality who they might not have faced much before, or whether I'm totally wrong and it's someone like Ewen Thompson. Some Statsguru type person might be able to work that out ;).

* Am going to ignore Sinclair's double ton on debut here as he wasn't half the domestic bully then that he is now.
The thing is, only Sinclair and Fulton average over 40 out of that lot.

Those guys have had their fair share of bad seasons as well.

Bit harsh on Neal Parlane when he hasn't even played a test.

So, now that ND have completed the win, lets see who did what.

Otago

Craig Cumming scored 168 runs and was out to RFM Brent Arnel and SLA Anton Devcich. He top scored in both innings.

Leighton Morgan scored a four ball duck before becoming an Arnel victim then scored 51 before falling to Yovich.

Greg Todd, a noted contender for the number three position for NZ, fell to Yovich and Scott and scored 17 runs in the match. Both bowlers are left arm seamers.

Rutherford didn't contribute with the bat.

Neil Wagner struggled.

Nick Beard took 3/59. His wickets were McGlashan (35), Scott (65), and Arnel (2).

Northern Districts

Brent Arnel took career best figures of 6/18 on what we suspect was a pitch that was fair for batsmen. His wickets were Cumming (42), Morgan (0), Rutherford (12), de Boorder (0) (first ball duck), and Wagner (9). He only took one second innings wicket (1/67) and it was Mathew Harvie (11).

Bradley Scott was very tight and took one wicket, Haig, for a duck.

Michael Parlane, an opener, scored 51.

James Marshall and Daniel Flynn both failed, falling to Bullick and Harvie respectively.

Williamson also fell cheaply to McSkimming for 2.

Yovich scored 128*

Graeme Aldridge and Bradley Scott notched up fifties.

Yovich took 3/29 in the second innings, snaring Morgan, Haig and McSkimming.

Anton Devcich took 2/30, getting Cumming and de Boorder.

So, thoughts? I thought that sequence of events was a good time killer myself.

I support ND, and i'll put my left leg on him being a right armer.
Haha, dont worry I believe you he's a right armer.

Though sticking to it on the off chance you're going to lose your left leg is tempting..:p

EDIT: yep, right arm fast medium apparently. Not so sure on the fast medium bit but he is right arm.

I hope against hope Yovich is ambidextrous now. Just to see you put various parts of your body under the knife. :p

Reminds me of the Welshman that said if they win/lose (can't remember which way around it was) the rugby match he'd chop off his testicles.

He did it too.

I don't know why you think he's so slow for, he actually has some pretty decent pace tbh.

Not overly. Cricinfo are pretty broad when they talk fast medium. I'd go for medium fast but it doesn't matter that much.

Decent bowling allrounder is Yovich. Not really international quality, but good for ND.

Jeez you're an embarrassment sometimes, Flem. This is the kind of rubbish Te Ahu and Mitch McClenaghan are on about.
I embarrass you?

Thats nice.

Funny how I pretty much knew what you were going to post when I clicked on the thread.

FWIW, I don't really care if I get it wrong. Someone says you're wrong, you see it and move on.

But damn me to hellfire for not being 100% correct all the time, so obviously unlike yourself.

Leighton Burtt picked up 5/57 against Wellington, including Cameron Merchant for 99. Haha harsh.

Canterbury in trouble at 48/3. Think Myburgh might be injured as he's being shuffled down the order. McKay bowling his left arm seamers picked up the openers (and no I didn't have to check cricinfo to see what arm he bowls with :p)

Auckland currently killing us. Jeremy Kuru claiming the only wicket so far. Anyone know what he bowls yet? McIntosh picking up a fifty along with Jones who's still there.

EDIT: According to cricinfo Kuru is right arm medium fast and 24 years of age.

Is Burtt an actual international prospect? I've seen him bowl a few times (I saw him live at Seddon Park last year and he looked alright) But the few times I've seen him bowl on TV he hasn't looked that flash. He's still fairly young and did play for the NZ under 19's a few years back so he must have some sort of upside.

Unlucky for Cam Merchant yesterday also, really pulling for the guy this year (Except for when he plays ND of course). He was never really able to bat where he's best suited for us so it's good to see him perform right away for Wellington.

Oh and CD really need to find a spinner, Worker's already sent down 31 overs in this innings.

Wasn't he always talked of as a number three? In any case, he's made a nice start to number five.

It would be nice if CD found a spinner but since Schaw strangely moved to Wellington (why would you move to a province that has Woodcock, Patel and Houghton?) I'm not sure we've got someone to replace him. I believe we have a spinner that played in the U19 squad that Williamson, Southee and co. came through and off memory his name was Tamiti Clarke but thats a guess. Whether the spinner I can barely remember is the best option I don't know. We seem to be pretty thin on bowlers these days.

Nick Beard and George Worker were the spinners in that team. Tamati Clarke is a middle order batsman, and he plays for ND.

Lol wrong again then.

CD should just steal Houghton then, and not listen to me, despite me telling them to steal Houghton.

Next time Skippy comes on for a chat it will be interesting to see if CD has any spinner lined up or whether they'll just use Worker.
