If it's his right elbow, New Zealand just colletively choked on their own rage.
Er...what?

It was Tait we thought was suspect anyway.

Interesting thread this, for what is essentially a money grabbing quick fix series. Good game though, ironic that Wattos one of the last Aussies left in one piece. :p

I knew Henriques would get picked but the question is, should he? Compare his stats with Butterworth (TAS), Christian (SA) and McDonald (VIC).

Henriques 23 matches, 268 runs @ 19.14 SR 81.70 - 21 wickets @ 38.61 Econ 5.41 age 22
Butterworth 38 matches, 482 runs @ 19.28 SR 79.93 - 40 wickets @ 34.27 Econ 5.21 age 25
Christian 25 matches 577 runs @ 32.05 SR 88.09 - 12 wickets @ 37.41 Econ 5.70 age 26
McDonald 60 matches 1045 runs @ 31.66 SR 77.29 - 51 wickets @ 36.41 Econ 4.87 age 28.

Henriques doesn't win in any stat.

The best barsman is Christian but he's the worst bowler. Butterworth the best wicket tacking option, McDonald the tightest bowler. Stats aren't everything but just find it funny and would like to know what someone like Butterworth is thinking he needs to do to get into the team.

Paine is going so well opening especially against India so I would keep him at opener. Watson at 4 pushing everyone down one would be perfect. White into the Symonds role, Hussey back to his usual number 6 and Voges to provide a steady hand at 7. Agree on Henriques, would be so much better with him there, also gives us a big hitter at 7.
Agreed. But the only reason i suggested Paine may bat @ 7 for the 2nd ODI is because on cricinfo they are saying Henriques wont make it in time for the game. But by the time the 3rd ODI Paine can continue opening & Henriques hopefully will be picked over Hopes.

I have never seen Chrisitan or Butterworth (although deep down based on stats i doubt whether they are real international quality, but i could be wrong). But dear god McDonald clearly aint ODI quality, he is hardly international quality. He for sure should be no where near ODI consideration.

Henriques based on what i've seen of him in IPL & the recent CL deserves to be picked.

McDonald pretty unlucky, the other two should be no where near ODI selection. Though there not really many quality all rounder options at present. Reckon a batting all rounder in North would have been a good option, especially in India.

Hilfy - shouldnt even be in the squad
Indeed. Nannes should be in the ODI squad. Dont understand why the selectors see him a T20 specialist only.

Siddle - jury is well and truly out
How so?.

Watto - average at best
His bowling ATM i presume your talking about

Be interesting to know when we last fielded a worse attack
Ha not sure tbh. Recently with Laughlin in the team it was pretty bad. But this is worst one i can remember in the last decade.

Isn't that the same thing?

I just find it funny that you say based on stats they aren't good when you could easily say both Butterworth and Christian have as good stats as Henriques. Based on what you've seen on Henriques what do you think he should be averaging? 30 with the ball, 25 with the bat??

Henriques may still become the superstar allrounder many tipped him to become, but his time has not yet come. I don't agree that McDonald, Butterworth or Christian should be selected instead, it is just odd that the all-rounder who has achieved the least at ODD and First Class level be the first one who is called up.

He looked good in the Champions League. But he is still a very limited batsman who has yet to prove even for NSW in FRC that he can be relied upon as a batsman capable of building an innings, nor has he displayed the ability to truly change a game with some late over hitting. His bowling is largely 135km/h medium pacers with little variety, accuracy or movement. Junior talent should count for zilch until he proves himself at the domestic level first.

Given that cricket has 3 formats you can hardly be international quality but still be able to be fairly good in one format. Look at Dwayne Smith for WI, he would be awful in tests & ODIs but tremendous in T20s.

McDonald is trash in all 3.

As i said given i haven't seen Butterworth & Christian i cant say much. But i have never seen anyone talk them up. At least Henriques before i first saw him last year in the IPL, since his under-19 WC days he has been hyped as having a big future & the potential is obvious even his is domestic stats aren't superb to date.

not really... They play a ODI series seperately in a tour and play the test series seperately the next year. Has been happening since 2003...

This series isn't any more or less money-grabbing than Australia vs. England.

The difference is this should be some-what competitive.

Jesus, Lee and Johnson out too?

So that's more than half of the (selectors') first choice XI out: Clarke, Haddin, Ferguson, Bracken, Lee, Johnson and Hopes. Hopefully giving Hilf an extended run will help the selectors realise it's not a good idea.
will be the biggest loss.

Not sure what Aussie is rambling about Henriques for. I hope he does play for Australia one day, but he's done sfa and most certainly does not "deserve to be picked" at this stage of his career. Lets see him actually have a reasonably consistent domestic season first....(as opposed to 2 good innings with bat and ball accross about 15)

If we're looking for a 5th/6th bowler (to split overs with Watto) I'd much rather see another specialist bat in the team and have Voges bowl more, or even Dussey ffs. Despite them having scratchy international records to date, we at least know they can hold their own with the bat from time to time, and are decent enough to be a 6/7th bowling option.

Very surprised to see Christian's name come up, SA have been playing him as a bowling all-rounder batting at 8 in SS and FRC for the past season or so. If you want to play as an all-rounder of any stripe at international level, surely you'd have to be batting top 6 for your state? Unless as a bowler, he's completely out of reckoning; even then, he's a good contributor with the ball but isn't going to scare any international batting line-ups. With the bat, he's got a style like Dean Jones but tends to, unlike Jones, stick to nick-and-nudge without the latter-over power hitting.

Of the ones mooted, McDonald in with the strongest chance surely?

Speaking of useful 6/7th option, I wouldn't be dissapointed in seeing Lee Carsledine called up. In a golden run of form with the bat, very adaptable as a batsman, can be used as a injury-gap measure without effecting the long term development of a younger cricketer (Henriques, Butterworth).

Entirely hypothetical, will never happen. Much like the return of Brad Hodge.
