Did Dan Cullen even get an SA contract?

What about Cullen Bailey?
Both got contracts, Dan Cullen wasn't even in the squad for this game. Cullen Bailey was in the 13, culled a day or so before today. Shocked they're both still in SA, tbh.

Shows what a joke it was for CA to give them both contracts a couple of years back. Has been fairly quickly downhill since. This on a home deck which, given it's a batting paradise initially, but turns on the last day or so. They've both been pretty ordinary, the occasional 5-fer by Bailey notwithstanding.

SA on top at Stumps with TAS 5/149. Pretty frustrating for the Tassies batsman all getting a start.

Pretty slow going in the West, WA would take 2/136 from 63 overs though you would think. I can't believe Magoffin is going to bat at 11, he's pretty good with the bat.

It was good to read that Bailey picked up 7 second innings wickets the other day in the futures league, he got smashed though 7-135 from 17 overs!

Yes some very sedate stuff at the WACA. Laughlin currently with the figures of 10 overs for 10 runs (he had 7 overs for 1 run at one stage).

Strange the lack of front-line spinners playing in the two games. No Cullen, no Bailey, no Doran (crap but QLD seem to always play him), no Heal, no Mangan. Compensated by some good (and young) seam bowling lineups.

No surprise in SA in a sense; was raining today, clouded over and will be so for the whole week. Only if you had an absolute gun spinner would you give them a go.

The other game is explained by, well, it's the WACA. :D

Surely they must have. Cullen Bailey was in good form at the end of last season IIRC, Dan Cullen, whilst still fairly young, was a big talent that never eventuated into much.

North brings up another ton. Brilliant, love North.

Speaking of good with the bat, hows Marsh, North then Voges for a middle order in domestic cricket. That would do alright at international, carve up in domestic cricket!

However, with very few exceptions, on paper these 4 teams would have to be the weakest I've seen in Sheffield Shield for a looooong time

From the way the selectors are speaking, am expecting North to be the heart-break story when the team for the Gabba Test is announced. I think there's a fairly strong desire on the part of the selectors to drop Watson down the order and kill off his career as a Test opener.

Sad about Dan Cullen. I remember when he got his first CA contract, and soon after bought a new house - and now he's just hanging onto a low level state contract. I think sometimes we forget about the actual human impact that a loss of form can have on a player's life.

The selection dramas. I'll most probably be going, I'd looove to see Ponting make a ton, but if there was anyone else in the team, I'd like to see, then I'd go Hussey when in form.

Yeah, agreed. Would he work a job at all, or just play cricket?

Not sure about that - Hildich's comments about how they wanted Hughes back and Watson did an okay fill-in job but should stay flexible seem quite like the 'thanks but no thanks' that Watson had this time last year after the tour to India when they wanted to get Symonds back in.

Why do they want Hughes back all of a sudden now? He's played a total of 0 important matches since he got dropped.

Maybe because they figure the West Indies are **** and he'll plunder their attack, especially on his home turf?
Yeah but if he got dropped he should have to earn his way back into the side.

For the record I definitely don't think he should have been dropped.

To me it's ridiculous that in domestically Australia's batting depth is in our openers - Hughes, Jaques, Rogers all have done enough for international selection and yet we have Katich and Watson opening - two non-specialists. Jaques never should have been dropped and neither should Hughes. I'd love to see the NSW pair opening for Australia for a long time to come (drop Katich to 4 and push Hussey/Watson down to 6).

Oh and QLD suck :'(. WA have a lot of batting depth to come. I'm surprised how terrified I am to see Noffke on an opposition's team sheet.
