Guys in the main draw of the Masters Series in Canada (really directing this at Oxenstierna, Smeltz and Hancianu), if you reckon you are in need of hard court practice doubles are available. From what I can see, this series generally attracts a number of top guys to play doubles (last year had Federer-Wawrinka, Nadal-Robredo, etc.), so if you want to play I'm cool with that. Drake-Korps and Davis-Mustard are in and seeded.

With Ross Onwye injured, Hayden is looking for a partner for this week too.

Naa no doubles for me this week. Might give all doubles a miss for the rest of this year and then look for a full time doubles partner for next season.

• Randy Smeltz has taken a convincing victory to move ahead 2-1 in his rivalry with Spain's Sergio Joaquin as he took a comfortable straight sets victory over the world No. 46. After giving up a one set lead in their meeting in Hamburg, Smeltz looked nervous early against the Spaniard as he fell down a break in the first set. But in a fighting display, Smeltz came from 3-5 down to take the first set in a tiebreaker as Joaquin served up a pair of double faults to hand the set to the CWLander. The second set was all to easy for Smeltz as he avoided a repeat of his capitulation in Germany, setting up a second round clash with either Miroslav Brdar or Julian Day. (Smeltz d. Joaquin, 7-6(4), 6-0)
• Jefferson Drake also managed to overcome a man who has caused him difficulties in the past as he accounted for Ivan Genov in straight sets. In a mirror image of Smeltz's match against Joaquin, Drake ran through Genov in the first set in just half an hour with a flurry of winners against the stunned Bulgarian. In his first match since a humiliating exit in the first round of Gstaad, Drake was tested in the second set but served brilliantly in the tiebreaker to secure a second round berth against local hope Davis Kennedy who was very impressive in victory against Germany's Becker Haas. (Drake d. Genov, 6-1, 7-6(3))
• Indianapolis finalist Jojo Mustard will be forced to rely on the doubles tournament to find some form ahead of the CW Open after giving up a one-set lead against American Jason Bradley. In a brutal draw for the world No. 29, he started confidently as he was first to find his range as he shot to a 4-1 lead. But after cleaning up in the first set, Mustard stumbled in the second as Bradley competed as one would expect from the dogged American. Taking the second 7-5, Bradley surged into the decider with confidence and momentum and stormed into a second round clash with world No. 1 Daniel Páez Blanco with a three-set win. (Bradley d. Mustard, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2)
• Elsewhere, unseeded Hungarian János Varga caused the first upset of the day by defeating fourteenth seed Henry Charles in three sets 7-6(8), 0-6, 7-5 despite a disastrous second set he lost within just twenty-four minutes. Eleventh seed Rasmus Olesen refused to fall in the same way later in the evening on the Grandstand as he came from a set down to defeat Oneil Stewart 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Despite it being a highly anticipated clash, twelfth seed Dwayne Murdoch overcame the indignity of his straight sets thrashing last week in Washington to slaughter Chinese prodigy Zhijun Sun in just fifty-three minutes 6-0, 6-2.

• The doubles draw got underway with two of tennis' superstars involved in rare doubles action and victories. World No. 2 Jason Hall and his partner Jason Bradley had little trouble disposing of British duo Liam Bailey and Matthew Charnock 6-3, 6-4, but now find themselves drawn against Wimbledon champions and second seeds Sandro Bachunelli and Hicham Hadir. Another Bachunelli, Antonio, teamed up with Italy's No. 1 Carlo Amato to beat Indian brothers Ashim and Seby Kumar 6-2, 6-3.

Over in Segovia, wildcard Suryakant Singh has been drawn against little-known Chinese player Sheng Yiming. A victory, however, will likely set up a tough slog in the second round against top seed and world No. 55 Viktor Vuriak. David Briggs will play his first tournament as well after earning a wildcard into the main draw where he will play Christian Mary.

• CWLand wildcard Heath Davis has set up a difficult second round clash with world No. 2 Jason Hall following a come-from-behind with over Belgian qualifier Mark Harmel. Davis came into the contest expecting a tough match, and that's what he got as the dogged world No. 57 scrapped his way to take the first set 6-4. But Davis was unpertubed, and in a positive change of fortunes he managed to work his way back into the match with an early break in the second set. From there he had no difficulties as he advanced to the second round in three sets with some attacking tennis against an opponent who struggled to handle the power of the CWLand national. (Davis d. Harmel, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3)
• World No. 30 Jamee Hancianu likewise opened proceedings with a victory as he cruised past Ralph Robinson on Court 1 in straight sets. Hancianu has made a habit of crushing lowly ranked opposition, and the youngster made no exception for doubles superstar Ralph Robinson. The big-serving American fired down more than his fair share of aces, but offered little else on the open court as Hancianu dictated proceedings to set up a second round clash with Darcy Cowan. (Hancianu d. Robinson, 6-1, 6-4)
• Rob Bowenburg, however, had no such luck on the Grandstand Court against Indianapolis champion Morgan Carter as he, like Mark Harmel, gave up a one-set lead to fall in three. After finishing qualification off yesterday morning with a tight win over Karl King, Bowenburg came out looking focussed and on song against the scratchy American. But after dropping the first set 3-6 and falling down 0-2 in the second, Carter shook off the cobwebs at exactly the right time to rally back to claim the second set 7-5. An early break was too much for Bowenburg in the third as Carter advanced to a second round contest with sixth seed Sven Oxenstierna. (Carter d. Bowenburg, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3)
• In the final match of the day, Russia's Dmitry Orlov continued the frustrating season of highly rated Serb Danijel Micic as he prevailed in three sets. Micic was rated one of the best players in the world at the start of the season, but has failed to back up such faith as he fell to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss. Seeded eighth, József Boros became the first player through to the third round after comfortably accounting for Norway's Kim Vollan 6-4, 6-2. In the match of the day, Diego Hurtado defeated Switzerland's Almen Benaglio for the second time this month in three sets. The Miami finalist's first round exit will no doubt come as a disappointment, with the powerful forehand of Hurtado finding its mark for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win to ensure he will pose a real threat to Ukraine's Illya Altman.

• World No. 1 in singles Daniel Páez Blanco, along with his partner Sergio Joaquin, will this week have the chance to prove critics right that he should have been involved in Spain's doubles team for the Davis Cup loss to Serbia as they take on sixth seeds Ion Andueza and Sanchez Emelio. Needing some practice on the hard courts ahead of the CW Open, Blanco and Joaquin won a see-sawing match against Gai Kai and Lu Xun 6-0, 2-6, 10-8. Henry Charles' week got worse in the following match as he and Illya Altman failed to combine well; Artem Krohmal and Merab Shvelidze setting up a second round clash with top seeds Hugh James and Ralph Robinson 6-1, 6-2.

• Suryakant Singh picked up where he left off last week in Samarkand with a straight sets win over China's Sheng Yiming. Singh looked confident right from the start, but was made to fight against the world No. 183 on the Spanish clay. Singh now faces a more difficult second round match against top seed Viktor Vuriak. (Singh d. Sheng, 7-5, 6-3)
• David Briggs repaid the faith the CWTA showed in brokering a wildcard entry for him as his first competitive victory for his adopted nation resulted in an upset win. Against France's Christian Mary, who made the second round of the French Open back in May, Briggs played well despite looking awkward at times on the clay surface. Briggs now has bigger fish to fry in the second round with Belarusian Denis Isaev waiting following his comfortable win over India's Harpreet Gupte. (Briggs d. Mary, 7-5, 6-4)

• Sixth seed Sven Oxenstierna has started his Rogers Cup assault off with a successful return to to form as he comfortably accounted for American Morgan Carter. The French Open finalist was beaten in the first round at Gstaad a fortnight ago, and bounced back perfectly against the Indianapolis champion who struggled to beat the ever-consistent CWLander. Still without a title to his name, Oxenstierna faces a tougher challenge in the second round after eleventh seed Rasmus Olesen comfortably smashed Tiago Matias in straight sets. (Oxenstierna d. Carter, 6-2, 6-4)
• In the day's main attraction on Centre Court, Jefferson Drake ensured the crowd would not go home happy as he cruised past world No. 17 Davis Kennedy. The Canadian looked pumped up in front of his home crowd, but as the match settled Drake proved his quality in a clinical display. Drake faces his biggest test yet in the form of Radek Špidlá; the third seed was made to work hard in his opening match against Dmitry Orlov where he eventually prevailed 7-5, 7-6(1). (Drake d. Kennedy, 6-4, 6-2)
• Randy Smeltz gave his best indication yet of an ability to compete with the big names of world tennis as he took Croatian gun Miroslav Brdar to three sets on Court 3. In a tight battle, Smeltz was eventually done in by the in-form Croat following a disappointing third set that saw the CWLander undo all of his good work. Brdar's service showed no signs of deteriorating since Umag a fortnight ago as he sought to maintain his place in the world's top ten with a three-set win. (Brdar d. Smeltz, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1)
• The top five players in the world proved their gulf against CWLand players as both Jamee Hancianu and Heath Davis were humbled by American opponents. Hancianu put up little resistance against Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan as he continues to have difficulties away from his native clay surface. Davis meanwhile found himself against world No. 2 Jason Hall who barely got out of first gear in a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over the wildcard. In his first match on Centre Court, Davis struggled with the occasion, his service and his highly rated opponent en route to the straight sets loss. (Cowan d. Hancianu, 6-1, 6-3)
• Elsewhere, seventh seed Juan Moreno was the biggest name to fall as he fell to Rick Henson 4-6, 3-6 whose form and fitness improves with every match he plays. Despite his crushing victory over Zhijun Sun on Monday, twelfth seed Dwayne Murdoch's inability to produce the goods in Masters Series tournaments culminated in a shock loss to Italy's Antonio Bachunelli. Bachunelli will not be joined in the third round by countryman Carlo Amato after Aussie David Champion secured a tight 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win. Top seed Daniel Páez Blanco continues to cling on to his world No. 1 spot for another day at least as he accounted for Jason Bradley in a cagey 6-3, 7-6(5) affair.

• Seeded players out: Illya Altman; Carlo Amato; Juan Moreno; Dwayne Murdoch.

• Rob Bowenburg and makeshift partner Hayden Onwye have produced the biggest upset of the doubles draw so far by stunning Hungarian duo János and Zoltán Varga in three sets on Court 1. The pair dropped the first set, but came back strongly against the brothers to advance to a second round clash with Mark Harmel and Yves Parmentier in the match tiebreaker. (Bowenburg / Onwye d. J Varga / Z Varga, 3-6, 6-2, [10-6])
• Carlo Amato and Antonio Bachunelli booked their spot in the quarterfinals with an upset win over fourth seeds Tal Cohen and Raz Teper. The duo broke service at cruicial stages of the two tight sets to earn a well deserved victory 7-5, 6-4.
