Watching Delhi vs KKR yesterday, it struck me that Warner and Henriques almost seem to sum up the two teams. They're both on similar contracts (on was $350000 and one was $400000 I think) and both young talents from Australia. And I expect they'll both play a lot for Australia in the future. But Warner is a T20 specialist who has had proven sucess in the format domestically before he was signed in the IPL.

In domestic T20, Warner averages 30 with a SR of 141. Henriques averages 14 with a SR of 113 batting, and bowling 34 with an ER of 8.2.

This totally isn't meant to be Henriques-bashing, I'm sure he's a very talented player. But Buchanan seems to think he's a T20 specialist. Last week, he said he was a T20 specialist that Australia should be playing in the T20 world cup.

In summary, Henriques is one piece of evidence that Buchanan has lost his marbles. I seriously think I could pick a better T20 team than he could. Perhaps I should apply to be his consultant?

Yeah I'm not too sure on the opinion that Henriques should be near the T20 World Cup side. So far the only thing Henriques has proven is that he has numerous potential. You do get the feeling that he is just around the corner from turning his career around. Any cricketer who can hit the ball as hard as he can, and bowl at a brisk 140kmh is worthy of putting time into.

He has bowled pretty well this IPL I thought. Been given some tap at times, but thats not suprising given the lack of quality options around him. KKR overpaid for him, but who knows what sort of cricketer he may become over the next two-three years. May become one of the most shrewd signings of the IPL. Just have to wait and see.

Yeah, maybe next year he'll be great and I'll have to eat my words. But after that, anything KKR have put in will be potentially lost because he'll just be picked up by another team in the bidding. I think he's a reasonable squad member anyway, but I don't get why for so much money. The young Aussies last year (Marsh, Pomersbach, Watson - all players with lots of potential) went for miles less than that and it probably helped them because there was less pressure on them. Henriques is under a ridiculous amount of pressure, partly because of the amount he's being paid but also because of his elevation above Mortaza and yesterday Dave Hussey.

Re: Mosies

Every match you watch him play you expect something special, he got all the tools but does nothing. I can understand why he gets picked ahead of Mortaza. Who is nothing special. Mathews isn't a great bowler and a better FC batsmen then OD or Twenty20. But how the does he get ahead of Mendis especially with Karthik pathetic bowling form.

Hussey really fighting with Hodge and van Wyk spot. Though McCullum the guy they need to drop for Hussey, he has been useless.

Basically KKR have had play A, but no plan B.

DC vs RR

opening
DC: Gilly and Suman
RR: Smith and Ojha
comment: evenly matched, more like who fires on the day

3-5:
DC: Rohit, Symmo and Rao
RR: Asnodkar, Jadeja and Pathan
comment: Advantage DC

6-8
DC: Smith, Teja and Ojha
RR: Carseldine, Raut and Warne
comment: RR has an edge

bowling:
DC: Vaas, RP, Ojha, Shoaib and the all-rounders
RR: Amit, Harwood, Warne, Trivedi and the all-rounders
comment: RR bowling is in form

looks like this could be a close one but if RR match-winners have a good day then they can pull it of for RR

I hope the above is not the actual line up for RR, would like something like the one below

- Smith
- Ojha
- Carseldine
- Jadeja
- Pathan
- Raut
- Niraj / a bowler if Henderson plays
- Warne
- Harwood / Henderson
- Trivedi / Atul / Amit
- Munaf

Everyone has been talking about how the seniors have been doing so well in his version of the IPL. I decided to check the theory. I first divided the players into three age groups - 30 and above, 25 to 30 and below 25.

Then I took the top 7 run getters in each group (aggregate runs). This gave me one wicket keeper in every group plus at least three who also bowled. Then I took the top four wicket takers in each age group and came up with these sides - in approximate batting order

Non Indian players in bold red.

Below 25 (Avg age : 22.7)
  1. RV Uthappa
  2. KD Karthik
  3. SK Raina
  4. RG Sharma
  5. RS Bopara
  6. IK Pathan
  7. RA Jadeja
  8. YA Abdulla
  9. RP Singh
  10. PP Ojha
  11. I Sharma

25 to 30 (avg age : 27)
  1. CH Gayle
  2. GC Smith
  3. AB de Villiers
  4. JP Duminy
  5. Yuvraj Singh
  6. MS Dhoni
  7. YK Pathan
  8. SB Jakati
  9. L Balaji
  10. MM Patel
  11. SL Malinga

Over 30 (avg age : 34.9)
  1. ML Hayden
  2. AC Gilchrist
  3. SR Tendulkar
  4. JH Kallis
  5. DPMD Jayawardene
  6. TM Dilshan
  7. BJ Hodge
  8. SK Warne
  9. DP Nannes
  10. A Kumble
  11. A Nehra

Clearly the over 30 players have to be non-Indian to be fit enough for this format :)

And yes the oldest group is on most counts the better on stats so far this edition.

Harwood went for a few the other day. Not sure the RR bowlers are in super form as they young guy with his action under cloud also didn't bowl as well, maybe a confidence thing in light of the allegations, while Patel has been relatively expensive all tournament.

That 30+ XI looks pretty unbeatable actually, SJS. Only De Villiers could hurt them.
I think the older team inevitably will look better. These guys have had the chance to become all-time greats. In terms of output in both this IPL and the last, Pragyan Ojha has outbowled Shane Warne quite comprehensively. But if you're comparing sides, you'll still look at Warne vs. Ojha and laugh at how mismatched and under-strength the younger side is.

30+ team is good, but:

3 AB de Villiers
4 JP Duminy
5 Yuvraj Singh
6 MS Dhoni
7 YK Pathan

That is a brilliant middle order. 25-30 lack the bowlers though.

20-25 has a very good bowling line-up.

Lets understand one thing, that experienced side doesn't just look better, in South Africa, it IS better.

The shorter the format the smaller the gap between the top most players and the lesser ones. The batsman friendly tracks, short boundaries, inability of the best bowlers to bowl more than four overs(mostly in 2-3 spells!!) etc make for the kind of play where great batting skills are not at such a great premium.

The shifting of the IPL from India to South Africa changed that.

The conditions in South Africa are not as batsman friendly as they were at home. Thus you need to have a good game to be able to sustain. The jumping out like a mad man and swinging the bat like a chopper's blade that made the likes of Asnodkar and Uthappa such hot shot T-20 batsmen was exposed for what it was - poor batting which will not work under unforgiving conditions.

With batting like that, even the bowlers got "equated" (for want of a better word). The Manpreet Goni's were as likely to get a wicket as the better bowlers and the spinners were best kept in the dug out. That too has changed in South Africa.

Go back to India next year and see the scores go back to ten an over, the Uthappa's and Asnodkars to again warm the ****les of the electronic media's heart (they are tearing their hearts out at not being able to scream for dropping the old foggies) and the spinners be banished to the benches.:)
