Simmons has the potential to be even more Ganga-like than Smith though. Smith's actually an opener; both Ganga and Simmons are upper-middle-order players who have been shoved up to open because they look like they're technically suited to it.
Really? I thought Simmons was actually an opener. 'Twas why I was disappointed he was picked down the order in his debut Test.

I read somewhere (cricinfo I'm pretty sure) that his preference is to bat 3 or 4, but that he's spent a lot of time opening as well and is comfortable with it. Which sounds a lot like Ganga to me. :p

There seems to be a bit of a groundswell of support in the press behind the idea of playing two spinners. Just what has Monty Panesar done to deserve a place in the squad let alone the XI? He's taken 3 first class wickets in 3 games at an average approaching 90.

Seriously, when was the last time MSP did anything much of note for Northants?

I can't remember him doing so since 2005.

Panesar is loved by the media and they don't like Onions as he's an unfashionable Durham player(TM) (Bresnan not much more fashionable either, but he's bound to be picked I'd have thought) - so it's a no-brainer for them who they want in the side.

I think the idea of two spinners this summer has come about more because of the way the Aussies have been batting against spin, and also it being their bowling weakness, than anything else.

I doubt there are may instances he actually played fro Northants as he was permanently with England on tour wasn't he?

And is Dwayne Brave touring? Windies could benefit from his seam and semi-good batting

He won't have played that much 2006-2009, but it's definately more than never.

EDIT: he actually did well in 2006 when he played, but in 15 matches for Northants in 2007, 2008 and 2009 he averages, as of this post, 39.72. And in 1 of these games he took 9-112; in the other 14 it's 46.94.

Yet despite doing virtually nothing for Northants in these 3 seasons he still managed to exploit the yearly Old Trafford turner in 2007 and 2008. And West Indies' inept playing of him at Lord's where they just kept being hit on the pads by straight balls (in fairness it was more tailenders than top-order) has evidently never been matched by counties.

Why is that? This is not meant to defend him, but more on a vaguely related note, my brother saw Bernard bowl on some SkySports News highlights and said he looks a handy bowler.
Beggars can't be choosers - if Bernard is the best we have to fill the current gap in the WI lineup, then I say, give him a chance!
:)
Agreed, Bernard is actually quite a handly bowler and can swing it if condition are right, suppose this wont come to the fore much in the first test but could do in the second. Despite being an average bat he is as close to Bravo as we have right now.

An extreme joke was this. The reason for Bravo's exclusion was that his 'body wasn't up to 5 day cricket' don't really see how that works when he is conveniently fine to play a bunch of games in the IPL. I know they're different games but he's been back a while now and is surely ready for some test cricket.

Nope. He was feeling the effects of the ODIs after every match and they were spaced out. Imagine five days of consecutive cricket.

Looking forward to this game tonight, finally some real cricket. I'm really hoping England bats first, I just want to watch Fidel Edwards. And I wouldn't mind if Bopara failed, and KP:laugh:

On Bravo playing in the IPL, I really can't blame him for taking that option....

He missed out on the Stanford payday, he received no money from the WICB while he was laid up for eight months after his ankle op, and this was a last-minute tour, after Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka were ruled out.

In future, I believe the ECB should seriously consider not scheduling tours to clash with the IPL.

I don't think there will be a problem with clashes in the future, I understand the IPL is going to be moved to earlier in the year, to March/April.

Money aside, the IPL is still the best thing for Bravo. The World T20 is more important for the WI than this test series, so it's important that Bravo is fit and firing for that.

If the IPL moves to March/April, that would be much better....

What that would mean, though, is that the WIndies season would have to start in January, and won't be able to drag on too long!

DWTA.

Bravo should be coming in at number 6 for the Windies and demonstrating his ability with the bat at the home of Cricket. He could bowl a limited number of overs in a day say 10-12, I am sure he could handle this.

He'd still play in the World T20 ffs.

It's the WICB he's not playing this series, not paying a guy for almost a year kind of limits your bargaining power when you want him to miss a big pay day. In all fairness, his fitness to play in the IPL is being much scoffed at, but the fact that he was rested the other day perhaps shows that he's not 100% and T20 matches really arent that strenuous.

Shame he's not playing the tests, his bowling could have been really handy in early season England, particularly at the Durham test. Hopefully Taylor and Edwards pitch it up and cause some problems with their extra pace. Backing Bopara for a ton here if England bat first.
