Oh ok. We have differing definitions of the phrase, "can bat."
guess its just the years we have been stuck with bowlers who are absolutely worthless with the bat to the extent where we have compromised our bowling, the fact that most of the young bowlers starting out can hold a bat seems a very good thing. I mean Saj Mahmood has batted at no 8 for England and more than once I heard his batting ability mentioned as a positive in his selection, but I'm worried if he's batting higher than 10 for Lancashire. From what i've seen Harris >>>Mahmood at batting (and bowling obv)

Yeah, because there are no stupidly flat pitches in international cricket, so he'd have no benefit at all from developing his bowling on such pitches...
You can only develop what you've got. No evidence to suggest he can yet bowl on them, so there's no point throwing him to the wolves trying to make him do so.

Really? We ranked him firmly as a tailender.
Different definitions of tailender as well. A tailender is someone who is essentially almost never going to do much of note with the bat - maybe get no more than 3-4 half-centuries over a career.

Game slipping away from Hampshire with Troughton and Ambrose still batting, unless we get a few quick wickets attention will have to be turned to securing a draw.

Really good to see the England bowlers all start so well. Anderson, Broad, Swann and Harmy all in the wickets.

And of course Saj who is 'pushing for a place' is doing well too...

Still he gets another the zillionth opportunity to impress by getting picked for the England Lions team.

Hampshire missing Tahir in this game, reminds me of the start of last year when we failed to build on early wickets. Hope maybe he can come back from fitness a little ahead of schedule

Can Lancs make a mess of this?

Flintoff is coming home to have surgery on his knee.

Hmm, no surprises there, paves the way for Bell and Vaughan to make the side now...though would rather Bopara gets another chance at 6.

Side looks likely to be

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan/Bell
KP
Collingwood
Bell/Bopara
Prior
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Harmison

Hampshire day going from bad to worse, Troughton about to get a double, Dawson 5 overs for 50! going to have to show some real character with the bat now.

Surely Bopara would play at 6 give his one test to date.

Isn't there also some doubt over Cook's fitness though?

Think he is playing on Saturday so I guess not.
Would rather have Bell than Bopara, problem for Bell is that if he gets runs at 6 against West Indies then it will be written off as meaningless where as if Bopara does the same he will be hailed as a new England star.

It might get written off here, depending on the situation he scores the runs, but in the media they'll lap up anything Bell does.

Derbyshire need 220 to win against Surrey, with plenty of time to get 'em. Can't help thinking that letting their last pair put on 80-odd yesterday will prove crucial here.
