Vettori is such a good limited overs bowler.
As Hussain was saying in commentary during the England tour of New Zealand, he hasn't seen any one getting on top of Vettory slogging for even a bit of time. You have your options cut out against Vettori and if you try some thing flamboyant, you go back to the pavilion.

If the IPL are worried about the expenditure on players they could enforce or tighten the salary cap. And anyways you have heaps of money being wasted with internationals sitting on the bench right now so it's not like it would make a huge difference as they're getting paid anyways aren't they? Furthermore, I disagree that the 'extra eyeballs' would be minimal. From a global perspective, including foreign players which give the supporters of the player's country a reason to tune in would provide a substantial return on investment (imo).
Agree with all of this but still feel 7-4 is the right way to go. You give Indians chance to play against the best in the world and a few players from each country always means you have eye balls any way. It is better for Indian cricket if it is 7-4 rather than 6-5 as more guys get the opportunity to break into an XI. A 6-5 format would be more successful and I can see the possibility of them adopting it in the future though they are quite adamant of it being 7-4 at the moment.

Oh, Ganguly doesn't like it. The ball is coming above waist height.

Great start.
Ganguly was absolutely woeful in his inning today. Slashed and missed numerous balls. Then his one over bowling didn't go well either. A bad day out for Ganguly and Laxman after a good day for Tendulkar and Dravid.

It is not too bad, the weather will clear up which will sort the pitches out and the games have shown the value of applications at the crease for the batsmen.
Exactly. Runs are not on offer for free or easily which is always better than watching slog fests. Even contests or even the ball dominating a bit more than the bat is more impressive to watch than the other way around.

First Impression of teams

- Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai look pretty strong
- Hy'bad has superb top 4. If Symmo returns it will be a boost .... If they get their bowling right, they could be the surprise package for the semis
- RR needs to bat well in such conditions. Need a batsman who can anchor the inning
- B'lore looks better than last time, probably helped by the conditions. looks like a mixed bag team atm
- KKR and Mohali will have to pull up their socks

Many teams tend to pick up after 3-4 games, so it will be interesting!

Let's just forget about the first match. Void.

Deccan Chargers, whose explosive batting was offset by very weak bowling, came good with the ball tonight. Fidel Edwards had pace, bounce, as well as a little movement, and was stingy. RP Singh took four wickets tonight, and deserved a fifth, and may be on his way to sealing a place for himself in the squad for the World T20 Championship. Ojha was a surprise package, while Harmeet was unspectacular, but the one to be taken for runs was Styris. He did, however, get two wickets, even though he was lucky. Kolkata's batting was simply dire, and doesn't deserve a mention.

Their bowling, though, was a little better. Ishant still struggled to take a wicket and ended wicketless, but was stingy and gave little away. Dinda took one, but was expensive, as also Kartik. Agarkar's sole over went for 15 runs, as Rohit Sharma got stuck into him. Laxman and Gilchrist got starts, but couldn't convert them, though Sharma saw them home till the end. There are no issues with Gilchrist as captain, it seems, but with talk of multiple captains in Kolkata, as Ravi Shastri said, on present form, they will need as many as eleven captains to get their act together!

RP Singh is a handful in T20 and a handful when conditions suit him, he should certainly be in the squad for the World T20 in England, pending not having an absolute shocker from here on. Harmeet was unspectacular, with a slight lack of pace (115-120kph) but I'm sure he'll get another game and we'll see how he does on a non wet surface and pitch - he had a good slower ball and the accuracy and seam position were good.

Ishant was good, but I don't think he can be included for the World T20 if he doesn't start performing in the format. He needs to take some wickets while remaining tight - his rivals for the pace bowling spot all have either a strong T20 record, can bat or are putting together strong IPL showings (Kumar, Irfan, RP Singh, etc).

Whatever it takes!!!
Nice to se T20 games where bowling can also play a part... :)

CSK lost it when they sent in Flintoff at 4... You have batsmen like Dhoni and Badrinath (who are specialist batsmen) waiting and you send in Flintoff... He plays too many dot balls to get himself in. We have seen it with him in ODIs and we have seen it with him in T20s as well.. He cannot go in and straightaway start off hitting. He is better as a slogger at 8 or 9... The others should bat above him. Hopefully Morkel will come in for Oram today... And for God's sake, use your spinner, Dhoni... Maybe bring in Murali for Thushara? And get Balaji in for Ashwin... Else, simply use your spinner. We have seen they are the playmakers for the bowling side in such games...

My feelings on each team:

Chennai Superkings - Looking good, balanced... But nothing that screams out championship material. Expect them to struggle but still get into the semis.

Mumbai Indians - Got a gr8 opening pair.. Decent middle order but not sure if they can handle if Sachin or Sanath goes early... Their bowling attacks looks really good though.. Zak, Malinga, Harbhajan and Bravo is as good a T20 attack as you can get... The fifth bowler COULD be the problem for them.

Royal Challengers, Bangalore - Looked very good... Expect them to remain competitive throughout and make the semis. The lack of quality in their Indian players (apart from RD and Kumble) could hurt them. Still expect them and Mumbai to challenge each other for #2.

Rajasthan Royals - Look weak both in bowling and batting. Need their international stars to fire to remain competitive.. Expect some of the Indian T20 specialist blokes of them from last year to be "found" out in these conditions.. NOt the least, Asnodkar...

Delhi Daredevils - Look the strongest side out there.. No discernible weaknesses. Great opening pair, very good middle order, a wonderful Limited Overs spinner, McGrath.. Their 3 other bowlers could be weaknesses but they can manage it given the power of their batting.

Kings XI Punjab - Same as Royals... Don't seem to have enough good local talent to make an impact.

Deccan Chargers - Looked gr8 in their fist game. Still think their bowling is little weak and batting, apart from the top 4, don't inspire confidence...

Kolkata KnightRiders - Same as Royals and Kings XI...

My rankings on potential and what we have seen off the first game:

1. Delhi
2. Mumbai
3. Bangalore
4. Chennai
5. Deccan
6. Rajasthan
7. Punjab
8. Kolkata

If I hear dlf maxium one more time I'm going to flip. Its a ****ing 6 call it a 6.
Well said. That and the Citi moment of success drove me insane in the first game. I'm watching the rest of the IPL on mute.

Another reason for me doing that is Simon Doull's presence.

Anyone know if channel 10 are televising these games in Australia?
if you are refering to a certain game, i'm not sure

but C10's free to air digital sports channel - OneHD has the rights to the IPL, all games so far have been shown.

Absolutely, I meant it was outstanding in a "how low can these guys go" sense.

Horrific call by Mahela there. Worst possible time for that to happen and now he holes out.

Also not digging these jerseys. Punjab look like they'e rippd off the Arsenal kit and Delhi look like a PSG clone.Delhi had an awesome kit last year, don't see why the need for change.
It reminds of the English ODI kit, actually..

Yes, of course, but his struggles in ODIs are a bit surprising. We've seen utter rubbish at times, for a little while, in contrast to his much better performances early on in his career. It's good to see the Indians do a lot to help win the match for Deccan, but the disappointing thing about the team is that there's no Indian all-rounder prospect, with Sanjay Bangar (fine, he's no propsect, but he's still an all-rounder) playing for Kolkata and prospective signing going to Bangalore.
Ishant was good, but I don't think he can be included for the World T20 if he doesn't start performing in the format. At times, I guess he doesn't do too well playing for Kolkata. He's a much better bowler than that, and there's no reason why he can't pick up, as long as he stays fit. There's a need for proper bowlers in T20.

An early look at all teams-

Chennai: Danger round the corner. They depend too much on the Foreign Four, which isn't a good sign. We saw Flintoff and Oram promoted ahead of Dhoni and Badrinath, because of which Dhoni had to walk in when in a dire situation, and Badrinath had to play completely out of his position as a late-order slogger. They won't even have Flintoff for too long, though that may not be such a bad thing. The weakness in the Indian base, however, will hamper their chances- only Dhoni and Raina have stood out.

Hyderabad: They won't lose anybody, except, possibly, Symonds, and are shaping up nicely. Their bowling attack still looks a little weak, as a struggling batting side took 32 runs off four Styris overs, while Harmeet Singh is still raw and not very effective. Their batting is shaping up nicely.

Bangalore: It's early days, riding on Dravid's stability and Kumble's extra striking power in helpful conditions. These two will play a major role in the team's performance.

Kolkata: Doesn't look good. This controversy-ridden, much-publicised, star-studded team lacks proper group dynamics. Rather than make decisions to look flamboyant, SRK and Bucks need to do things to keep the team together.

Punjab: This is the team to watch, with the best Indian base, with as many as five national prospects (at varying levels) currently playing. A prominent supply line for the national team, their performance is crucial. While they will miss Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh and Sarwan, the loss of Sreesanth is even bigger, as he was their leading wicket-taker last season, and would play the whole season. We can't comment too much on that silly shootout at Newlands, but Goel is shaping up nicely as an opening batsman, with good support from Bopara, but Mahela isn't cut out for the late-overs attacking role he has to play here. And of course, if VRV Singh should be ahead in line for an India cap, his fielding should improve.

Jaipur: They axed Mohammed Kaif, and it's now stinging them badly. Except captain and coach Warne, all their foreign recruits (including local Smith) have failed, especially with the bat. Early days, but a lot will depend on multiple men Tyron Henderson, Dimi Mascarenhas, Yusuf Pathan and Shane Warne. Their bowling isn't too bad, but they can drop one man for batting strength, which is needed.

Delhi: Danger round the corner. We're seeing some laughable selections made here, especially with McGrath being benched for rookie Nannes, Maharoof benched (I wonder if he's fit, though) and some questionable decisions in bowling changes. They still, however, have a decent Indian player base, which will make them the other team to watch. Sehwag and Gambhir are still doing well together, but the management will have to guard against the temptation to replace one with David Warner at the top. The selection of HP seamer Vicky Malik is a good one, as he adds lower-order runs in addition to Maharoof (if he plays), Vettori, Bhatia, (and a little less) Sangwan, Mishra and Yo Mahesh. Good batting by Tiwary and Karthik will take them further ahead.

Mumbai: Sanath and Sachin opening. Enough said. They still, however, have too many bits-and-pieces players around, and can do without them- what Rohan Raje did, Abhishek Nayar can do a lot better. They look strong, but they need to be careful with the fifth bowler option- they can't rely on Sanath to do the job consistently.
