Im an australia fan and i would take lara over any of them just for the fact that he made alot of runs while the west indies werent great and that shows the stamp of a good batsman. I would also take lara because of the fact that he scored his runs at a very good rate and almost always converted his starts

i think you should also say lara looked the most aesthetically pleasing when on song. a true artist!

Honestly, if you don't want to debate or you don't have any respect for me, atleast have respect for yourself and ignore the thread. I wouldn't be spamming anyone's thread.

Not spamming. My post was one topic.

Suggest if you can't handle people disagreeing with your opinions without getting upset, you don't post them on the Internet. Especially when you're wrong anyway!

If you can act with a bitof maturity on this forum, particularly on occasions when someone disagrees with you re a West Indies player, then I'll respect you. Til then, you've only lost respect with that outburst.

not ganging up with Matt. but even I feel it is very legit to question equating shiv with lara, sachin and ponting. no disrespect to shiv, though.

Whatever it takes!!!
considering their best forms, Lara in tests by hair's margin for his big 100s and Sachin in ODIs
awta.. Although, Sachin's recent form means I think he is even closing what was a very very small margin between them as test batsmen, at least in my mind.. :)

For many fans, Lara didn't play at his full potential either.

You do admit that Chanders didn't achieve his potential until 8 years into his career, by that Lara was breaking records after records, besides it is not really about Stat, almost never unless we talk about someone like Sir Don. I am sorry, as much as one loves Chanderpaul, He is nowhere close, no matter what the records suggest.

Mitchell Johnson is a better batsman than Sachin, Lara, Ponting and Chanderpaul.

Here are his stats

- Test batting average : 85
- Tests per 100 : 3 and this inspite of having an unbeaten 90 every three Tests as well
- Tests per Fifty+ score : 1.5
- Strike Rate : 84.7/100 balls

Only Bradman beats him on the first three and even the Don cant touch him when you add the 4th !!

Its just that he did not play to his full potential till 26th Feb 2009

He is one of the all time greatest batsmen ..... even if he again does not play to his full potential from now onwards

Athlai

Not Terrible
85 innings 2 NO 4732 runs @ 57.01
121 innings 23 NO 5669 runs @ 57.84

Thats a whollllle heap of not outs.

But to be fair to both why don't we compare them while they were both in the team since Lara stopped playing in late 2006.

Lara again

Chanderpaul

85 innings vs. 92 innings

Much more reasonable for comparison

Lara scored 4732 runs vs. Chanderpauls 3903

Tells a massive story about the two batsman, despite scoring a very similar amount of centuries/half centuries

16/14 vs. 12/18 Lara has 800 more runs in 7 less innings.

i never thought one day we would have to spend serious amount of time proving lara was better than chanders. what next? ponting vs martyn?

The fault lies with those that are serious :) Otherwise it is great for a laugh :laugh::laugh::laugh:

I agree with bagapath's logic. Sachin in ODIs might be the only one who is a shoo-in for the alltime team, but I think Lara in tests might be quite close as well.
