That was going over legstump. Saw it live in a pub on the way home from food shopping.

Same as Broad, Harmison...

Why dont you go roll over the Windies huh? show them how its done:laugh:
Why the rebuke? Maybe he's not giving the Windies enough credit, but he didn't say one word of a lie.

That's why they've reduced it from 3 to 2 per innings.
There is no deterrent for using silly referrals, apart from losing a challenge. Teams will still try it on, especially when they are running out of wickets (from a batting sides perspective). Reducing it from 3 to 2 will not mean they will just use them in obvious cases!

I think today we saw what happens when you have just 2 referrals actaully. If you lose one, you think very carefully before using your second one. There have been 3 silly referrals in this match. Two of them came at the very end of the innings, and one of them was poorly used by Andrew Strauss and he's paid for it since. There were a couple of occasions when there were close shouts that England probably would have used a referral, except they only had one remaining.

The deterrent of losing a challenge is sufficient when you only have two in total.

Not Terrible
Not surprised at all. Sure the West Indies batting lineup is shocking but there are gems among it and therefore England still had to bring an attack. Which they failed to do.

Pfft, we're two days into a four-match series and the West Indies are still 150 runs behind. That was absolute ****e from England today but it's not yet time to write obituaries.

I appreciate what the reduction in referrals is aiming to do, and it is certainly an improvement on the three they initially had. However, I think there should be a better system to eradicate the major bloopers that are made, and that is quite simply to offer a penalty that will only make the captain use the referrals in definite cases.

Borderline LBW's are part of the game and I don't think this system is changing it a great deal. Yes the decision to change the Devon Smith appeal was proved correct, but even so, for every right one there will be a wrong one, as the third umpire must find utterly convincing proof to overrule the on-field umpires decision.

Use the technology to eradicate very poor decisions/glaring mistakes, not for touch and go LBW's.

England's attack was pretty toothless today. The pitch is offering very little for the quicker bowlers, and Monty is not getting half as much assistance as Benn did, or even Gayle. He's getting the odd one to really go, but on the whole pretty monotonous stuff.

Harmy's is still bowling medium pace stuff (admittedly not the track to try and break your back), but reasonably accurately. Broad on the whole was ineffective while offering too many run scoring deliveries.

But let's not fail to give credit to Gayle and Sarwan who have so far batted patiently yet ceased on any opportunities. Still fancy we can grab a 1st innings lead, if we snatch a quick one (or five) in the morning.

I don't have a problem with close lbw shouts being changed from "not out" to "out", if they appear to be out on the replay. If an umpire has to look at replays for more than a couple minutes, the original decision should automatically stand. There's obvious doubt and benefit to the standing umpire's decision in that case.

I think 2 appeals per innings in fair. It's not like you can appeal for anything, because you only have 2. As I said, it was evident with Strauss today. If he hadn't wasted the first appeal on a stupid one early on, he would've probably used it on a couple of good shouts later in the day. So he was punished for using his first one recklessly.

Once the third umpire handles "benefit of the doubt" properly, 2 is a fair number.

Yep these two are everything that's wrong with English cricket, ATM. I'm getting fairly depressed about it, to be fair. We've no chance against the Aussies.

I don't like to write off English bowlers, particularly if they're young, but enoughs enough :(
That might be a fair assessment of English cricket, however I wouldn't be writing them off in the Ashes just yet, its hardly like Australia are playing great cricket atm. The reality is the 2009 Ashes will likely be played by two pretty mediocre sides

Good grief. Even with Harmison being robbed of a wicket this is feeble.

Panesar 15 overs of toothless innocuous crap. Due to his utter ineptitude with the bat you've also got Broad being picked who's bowled 8 overs of toothless expensive innocuous crap. The only surprise is it is happening against WI instead of Australia.

England haven't even reached the heights of mediocrity with these completely brain-dread selections.
Scaly me old mate, I appreciate your frustration & you make some perfectly valid points. However I've never ever ever ever seen you give credit to the opposition when England play. Are you that one-eyed that you can't ever appreciate that two teams play this game & not just one.

Scaly give credit to the opposition? I doubt that will ever happen.

"Not getting as much assistance"... you're really letting Monty off the hook. It's not the pitch's fault that he barely turned a delivery. It's exactly the same pitch Benn bowled on, and Monty chucked pies while Benn bowled fantastically.

Good catch from Benn; I really thought Prior was going to go on with it.
Just an over or two before he played drive underneath a ball from Edwards and almost edged it. The issue then is that he spent 20-30s replaying the shot when it was clearly a ball you shouldn't be driving, instead of forgetting about the ball and moving on. You could see mental frustration from Sidebottom too when he missed a couple going down leg. From there, Prior threw his wicket away and sidebottom got lucky with a dodgy pull shot an over later.
