I will point out that I have made a bit of a ****up in the seeding. Smeltz should be seeded, but I had forgotten to add him when I first did the draw so I did so at the last moment. Apologies. I think he would've been seeded eleven; so maybe it isn't such a bad thing for him.

Second seed Sven Oxenstierna and world number 46 Randy Smeltz will partake in an all CWLand quarterfinal in Barcelona after the pair secured victories in their respective third round clashes. Oxenstierna overcame a difficult start to coast past thirteenth seed Ninteh Doh of Japan in straight sets; the world number seven taking the first set in a tiebreaker to surge ahead. But it wasn't all fun and games for the second seed as he rolled his ankle mid way through the second set, and was forced to call the trainer to his side. However the wily Oxenstierna recovered, and would again show his tremendous consistency to advance to the quarters 7-6(2) 6-3.
Randy Smeltz continued to upstage top ten seeds as he backed up a win over sixth seed Dmitry Orlov to upset ninth seed Nilikar Midid. Smeltz looked like he would make light work of his Croatian opponent as he took the first set 6-1; but Midid fired back into the contest with a solid second set. With the scores tied at 5-5, Midid broke the service of Smeltz to take a set-winning break, and to send the match to a dramatic decider. For just under an hour the pair duked it out - Smeltz recovering from a break down to seal the match in a convincing tiebreaker 6-1 5-7 7-6(2).
Seeds Out: 7-Maarten Berg (NED); 9-Nilikar Midid (CRO); 13-Ninteh Doh (JPN); 15-Roman Dorogan; 16-Oliver Engel.
Nervous Blanco prepares assault
World number four Daniel Páez Blanco has admitted he hasn't been at his best; the Spaniard citing nerves for his performances as he plays his first Open Era tournament in front of his home crowd. One could be forgiven for wondering just what the Monte Carlo Masters champion was talking about after his big 7-5 6-2 victory over sixteenth seed Oliver Engel, but the 28-year old remained displeased with his performance. "I will have to play better if I am to win this tournament," he said in front of a packed press gallery. "I think I feel a bit nervous playing in front of my home crowd, but hopefully I'll become more confident as the tournament goes on". Blanco also remained impressed with the field Barcelona has attracted. "It is great, you know, to see so many good players playing here. You've got guys like Kennedy, Altman and Oxenstierna who come out here and make this a great tournament," he said. "We have great crowds here, so it is good to see they get what they deserve."

It was a look of total frustration on the face of second seed Sven Oxenstierna as he bowed out in the quarterfinals of the Open Sabadell Atlántico in straight sets to fellow CWLander Randy Smeltz. The world number eight continued his inability to make it to the final stages of a tournament as he was thrashed by the world number 46 in straight sets. The match started poorly for Oxenstierna as he was broken in his first service game to fall behind the 8-ball early against a fired up Smeltz. The 28-year old came into the contest with confidence, but could not have expected to have played the tennis he did as he thrashed an underwhelming Oxenstierna. The world number eight was forced to do most of the running against an aggressive Smeltz, and his generally feeble service continued to suffer as he was broken again to lose the first set. The crowd expected more from the second seed, and they were thoroughly disappointed as he was again broken early in the second. Although he put in an improved performance in the second set, he was easily bested by a driven Smeltz who sealed the contest with a thunderous forehand winner to advance to the semifinals 6-2 6-3.
Smeltz will face another unseeded player in the his semifinal clash after Sanchez Emelio caused a boil over in his big win over world number nine Zhijun Sun. Emelio, ranked fifty in the world, played some inspired tennis in front of his home crowd and played his highly rated teenage opponent right off the court. Emelio negated Zhijun's powerful service with some aggressive returns as he sealed an interesting showdown with Smeltz in seventy minutes - 6-4 6-2.
Seeds Out: 2-Sven Oxenstierna (CWL); 3-Zhijun Sun (CHN); 10-Patrick Pascaul (FRA).
Altman looking to avenge loss
Fourth seed Illya Altman has fired the first salvo ahead of his semifinal clash with world number four Daniel Páez Blanco; stating his belief that he can become the first player to defeat the top seed on clay. Altman and Blanco previously met in the semifinals of Monte Carlo, and the Ukrainian pushed Blanco to two tiebreakers but fell in straight sets. Following his tight quarterfinal win over Patrick Pascaul, Altman told local media that he didn't believe the Spaniard was too far ahead of him. "He is a very good player, nobody is saying any different," he said. "But I believe he can be beaten, and as I showed last week I could be the person to do it. You just have to play your best; he's not unbeatable." Blanco was more subdued in his predictions following a straightforward win over Canadian Davis Kennedy. "Our match [in Monte Carlo] was very tough," he said of Altman. "I will come out expecting to play a man who is my equal."
