Open Sabadell Atlántico (1R) - Apr 20-26 Season I
Apologies about guys missing out. And probably Dittmar's hardest-hitting interview yet.
Open Sabadell Atlántico I
Round of 56 - Barcelona
Draw - 1st Section
Draw - 2nd Section
Draw - 3rd Section
Draw - 4th Section
Headlining the CWLand portion of the second round at the Open Sabadell Atlántico will be an all-CWLand clash between
Alex de Wet and
Sven Oxenstierna, after the former recorded an impressive first round win against Uzbekistan's
Anvar Juraev. The qualifier was already in good form following his straight sets qualifying thumping of
Marc Carretero, and he continued his good touch by taking the first set off the Uzbek number one. But after easing to the first set, de Wet started to show signs of his volatility as Juraev stormed back into the match to go up a break early. One broken racquet and a code violation later, de Wet was forced to go to a decider. In an even final set, the CWLander regained his composure and sealed a dramatic
6-4 3-6 6-4 victory to move to the second round.
In the same section,
Randy Smeltz continued his good form with a straight sets thrashing of Mexican
Felipe Pelayo. The world number 46 took little over an hour to dispatch his lower ranked opponent
6-2 6-3, and will need to continue this kind of form into his second round contest with sixth seed
Dmitry Orlov who enjoyed a rest. The 28-year old was too good for his Mexican opponent who at times struggled with Smeltz' ability to keep points alive. Elsewhere,
Roy Daniels and
Rob Bowenburg recorded victories in their first round clashes. Daniels dropped the second set to Frenchman
Jean-Alain Depuis 1-6, but was otherwise untroubled as he recorded his first victory on clay
6-2 1-6 6-3. Bowenburg was forced to come back from a set down to beat Brit
Oscar Highsmith in three sets; a victory which marked a much needed return to form for the struggling CWLander. His unlikely
3-6 7-5 6-2 victory sets up a second round clash with steady Belgian
Mark Harmel following his win over 11th seed
Tom Vollan.
Unsuccessful in their attempts to record a win were
Jarko Maxum and
Spas Delev. Maxum was again given a tough draw, and must be shaking his fists at luck as he suffered a
6-1 6-4 defeat against 13th seed
Ninteh Doh. The Japanese veteran was steady as ever as he just proved too good for the CWLand youngster to advance to the second round, whilst Delev managed to give up a one-set lead against
Sebastian Moss as he slumped to defeat. The pigeon-faced Moss dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but completely changed the momentum of the match with an early break in the second set. The confidence was exactly what the meek Brit needed as he set up a second round clash with Doh
6-7(6) 6-1 7-5.
Seeds Out: 11-Tom Vollan (NOR).
Daniels unsure about Luxembourgian
Just hours before his second round clash with Luxembourg's
Oliver Engel, CWLand's
Roy Daniels has made a tremendous gaffe as he admitted he's never even heard of Luxembourg. Ahead of today's contest, Daniels was asked what he thought about his seeded opponent. "I've only seen a little bit of Engel, but the bits I have seen of him make me think he's a very good player," Daniels said, before adding: "He's certainly one of the best French players going around". When grilled over his answer, Daniels did little to cover up his mistake. "Luxem-what?" a bewildered Daniels asked, "I've never heard of it." Daniels has developed somewhat of a reputation over making ill-timed comments; earlier this month he was said to have called compatriot
Brett Read a "joke" during a drunken binge in Houston, TX.
