Seventh seed
Sven Oxenstierna has survived an early scare to pull through his second round clash with a win in one of the most bizzare matches this season. Drawn against 40-year old qualifier
Vladimir Gryzlov, The Ox was stunned in the first set as an aggressive Gryzlov came out fighting as he smashed the CWLander 6-1 in the opening set. But after the powerful winners off a lacklustre Oxenstierna serve in the first set made way to a more meek Gryzlov who seemed to lose all confidence as he was broken in the first game of the second set. From there the seventh seed won eleven of the next twelve games to seal a remarkable turnaround
1-6 6-0 6-1 to set up a third round showdown with twelfth seed
Davis Kennedy. The Canadian, who also came from behind to beat
Dwayne Murdoch in a punishing contest, will prove a much bigger threat to Oxenstierna's run - The Ox will undoubtedly have to show more than he did in his insipid first set against the Russian.
Elsewhere, the third round will play host to an all-CWLand clash as
Randy Smeltz and
Brett Read produced upsets in their respective second round clashes. Smeltz found himself against countryman
Jefferson Drake, and all seemed to be going to plan as the fourteenth seed took the first set 6-4. But the fast-rising veteran soon pulled level with a reversed scoreline in the second set, before his dogged gameplan helped him to the spoils in an impressive third set. Drake, whose promising clay season seems to be dipping further into the mire, was ran off his legs by the hard-working Smeltz; a sign which doesn't bode well ahead of the five-set French Open in just three weeks. For Read, his dramatic reversal of form continued with a straight sets victory over fourth seeded Czech
Radek Špidla. Many expected the big-serving Czech player to struggle on the clay surface, but there were whispers that his power might prove to be too much for a merely 'solid' Read. The CWLander, however, shouted down these whispers with a special display as he romped home to a
6-3 7-5 victory in a match he controlled.
Joining Drake in the loser's pile was
Jojo Mustard who failed to back up a good first round display against German
Becker Haas. The CWLander found out how different it is to deal with a practiced clay-courter like Haas as opposed to a power-player like
David Champion; falling in straight sets
6-2 6-4.
Seeds Out: 4-Radek Špidla (CZE); 8-Miroslav Brdar (CRO); 14-Jefferson Drake (CWL).
Hall and Bradley set to collide again
In what seems to have become a fixture of ATP Masters Series events, Americans
Jason Bradley and
Jason Hall are set to do battle for the third time; this time in the third round of the Rome Masters. Whilst Hall boasts a winning record against his 24-year old opponent, Bradley is one of just four men to have defeated the world number one in the Open Era. "That was probably the biggest win of my career", Bradley said of his three-set win in Indian Wells, "I got a bit lucky by winning the two [tiebreakers] against him, but it was a great win to have none-the-less". Speaking after his straight sets thrashing of Croatia's
Nilikar Midid, Bradley said that he enjoys facing the world number one. "To win tournaments, you've got to beat the very best; and Jason [Hall] is the best in the world. It's not ideal facing him so early in the tournaments, but it is a great experience for me to go up against someone so good". Whilst Hall will undoubtedly be focussed on his third round clash, he will have one eye on likely semifinal opponent
Daniel Páez Blanco. The world number three decimated Italian
Antonio Bachunelli 6-0 6-1 to sound an ominous warning to the rest of the draw.
