Well played Maxum.
Quite disappointed though losing to a player with a record of 0-3.

Looking at the positives
a) I'm in good tiebreak form.
b) More time to prepare for the French.
I am shocked and appalled....yet oh so happy to be in the main draw!

It was a successful day for the CWLanders in the first round of the ATP Masters Series Rome, as four players joined Sven Oxenstierna in the second round. Whilst The Ox watched on as his second round opponent Vladimir Gryzlov overcame wildcard Zhenyu Fok, Jojo Mustard was forced to come back from a set down against thirteenth seed David Champion. Champion, whose game plainly isn't suited to clay court tennis, surprised all in the first set as he came out with a flurry of powerful tennis to catch Mustard on the back foot. But as Mustard began to get on top of his serve and draw out the points, Champion's endurance wavered and he soon capitulated to the solid game of the CWLander. Mustard's 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory sets up a second round clash with Becker Haas of Germany.

Headlining the CWLand portion of the second round will be a clash between fourteenth seed Jefferson Drake and Randy Smeltz. For the second time in as many tournaments, Drake proved too good for Argentina's Juan Moreno as he advanced 7-5 6-1 in a dominant performance. But as Drake overpowered Moreno, Smeltz was forced to come back from a set down against talented Hungarian János Varga. Varga dominated the early going with a brilliant opening set of tennis, but soon struggled with a hamstring injury which forced him to call the trainer. Whilst no real damage was done, Varga had lost the momentum after a lengthy delay which provided the impressive Smeltz the opening he needed to take the second set. By the third, Varga was mentally done and all that was left for Smeltz to do was to complete a remarkable 1-6 6-3 6-4 win. In the same section, Brett Read finally ended a winless streak to post an upset victory against China's Li Wang. After taking some time to get his head in check over the past couple of weeks, Read came into the match a new player as he aggressively dispatched the Chinese number two in a dominant first set. Li came back hard in the second set and went up a break, but Read would fight back and send the set to a tiebreaker. In a marathon breaker, the world number thirty sealed victory in impressive style - setting up a second round clash with fourth seed Radek Špidla 6-2 7-6(7).

Unfortunately for Jamee Hancianu, Billy Spleen, Heath Davis and Jarko Maxum, the end of the road came in the first round. Hancianu was handed a tough first round prospect in the form of Morgan Carter, and will be disappointed with his straight sets loss. It was a similar story for Davis; though he held fewer aspirations when it came to this tournament, he couldn't prevent a slide in his rankings as he was easily accounted for by Antonio Bachunelli 6-4 6-4. In the top section, the qualifier Maxum found himself to be out of his depth against ninth seeded Dane Rasmus Olesen. Maxum put up a good fight in the first set, but was outclassed by the world number eleven 6-4 6-1. Surprisingly, impressive 19-year old Billy Spleen took the first set against Spain's Sergio Joaquin, before giving up his lead en route to defeat. Spleen looked comfortable on the clay, but fell to nerves late in the final two sets as Joaquin secured a 6-4 6-4 victory.

Seeds Out: 10-Tiago Matias (POR); 13-David Champion (AUS); 15-Almen Benaglio (SUI).

Fantastic to win the first, hopefully Read puts up a good fight against Deckers.

Great win from Mustard to overcome the 3rd seed. Have to go up against one of my created players, so that will be interesting.

Seventh seed Sven Oxenstierna has survived an early scare to pull through his second round clash with a win in one of the most bizzare matches this season. Drawn against 40-year old qualifier Vladimir Gryzlov, The Ox was stunned in the first set as an aggressive Gryzlov came out fighting as he smashed the CWLander 6-1 in the opening set. But after the powerful winners off a lacklustre Oxenstierna serve in the first set made way to a more meek Gryzlov who seemed to lose all confidence as he was broken in the first game of the second set. From there the seventh seed won eleven of the next twelve games to seal a remarkable turnaround 1-6 6-0 6-1 to set up a third round showdown with twelfth seed Davis Kennedy. The Canadian, who also came from behind to beat Dwayne Murdoch in a punishing contest, will prove a much bigger threat to Oxenstierna's run - The Ox will undoubtedly have to show more than he did in his insipid first set against the Russian.

Elsewhere, the third round will play host to an all-CWLand clash as Randy Smeltz and Brett Read produced upsets in their respective second round clashes. Smeltz found himself against countryman Jefferson Drake, and all seemed to be going to plan as the fourteenth seed took the first set 6-4. But the fast-rising veteran soon pulled level with a reversed scoreline in the second set, before his dogged gameplan helped him to the spoils in an impressive third set. Drake, whose promising clay season seems to be dipping further into the mire, was ran off his legs by the hard-working Smeltz; a sign which doesn't bode well ahead of the five-set French Open in just three weeks. For Read, his dramatic reversal of form continued with a straight sets victory over fourth seeded Czech Radek Špidla. Many expected the big-serving Czech player to struggle on the clay surface, but there were whispers that his power might prove to be too much for a merely 'solid' Read. The CWLander, however, shouted down these whispers with a special display as he romped home to a 6-3 7-5 victory in a match he controlled.

Joining Drake in the loser's pile was Jojo Mustard who failed to back up a good first round display against German Becker Haas. The CWLander found out how different it is to deal with a practiced clay-courter like Haas as opposed to a power-player like David Champion; falling in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

Seeds Out: 4-Radek Špidla (CZE); 8-Miroslav Brdar (CRO); 14-Jefferson Drake (CWL).

Hall and Bradley set to collide again

In what seems to have become a fixture of ATP Masters Series events, Americans Jason Bradley and Jason Hall are set to do battle for the third time; this time in the third round of the Rome Masters. Whilst Hall boasts a winning record against his 24-year old opponent, Bradley is one of just four men to have defeated the world number one in the Open Era. "That was probably the biggest win of my career", Bradley said of his three-set win in Indian Wells, "I got a bit lucky by winning the two [tiebreakers] against him, but it was a great win to have none-the-less". Speaking after his straight sets thrashing of Croatia's Nilikar Midid, Bradley said that he enjoys facing the world number one. "To win tournaments, you've got to beat the very best; and Jason [Hall] is the best in the world. It's not ideal facing him so early in the tournaments, but it is a great experience for me to go up against someone so good". Whilst Hall will undoubtedly be focussed on his third round clash, he will have one eye on likely semifinal opponent Daniel Páez Blanco. The world number three decimated Italian Antonio Bachunelli 6-0 6-1 to sound an ominous warning to the rest of the draw.

The confusing form of Sven Oxenstierna has ended in tears for the seventh seed as he suffered a surprising loss to Canadian number one Davis Kennedy in the third round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. After an unconvincing second round win against Vladimir Gryzlov, Oxenstierna came out just as feeble as he did in the first set against the Russian veteran as Kennedy took advantage of a mediocre serve. The Ox was broken twice in the first set en route to a 3-6 loss, but looked to have turned the match around in the second as he reversed the scoreline. But with the match sent to a decider, the determined Canadian fought back to wrest momentum from the world number seven to seal an upset 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory on clay.

Whilst Oxenstierna's form has suffered in recent weeks, it is a completely different story for Brett Read whose remarkable resurgence continued with a straight sets win over countryman Randy Smeltz. Smeltz, who has been in impressive form as of late, looked taken aback by the confident and talented Read who quickly wrapped up the first set in just over half an hour. Whilst the solid Smeltz traded blows with Read in the second to sent it to a tiebreaker, the Australian-born player showed just how much difference some confidence makes as he booked a quarterfinal clash with local Carlo Amato 6-3 7-5().

Seeds Out: 2-Radivoj Daneu (SRB); 5-Darcy Cowan (USA); 6-Illya Altman (UKR); 7-Sven Oxenstierna (CWL).

Wow shocked to have lost that. Still funny to see The Ox breakdown in tears though.

Carlo Amato has kept the dream alive after advancing to the semifinals of his home tournament with a quarterfinal victory over Brett Read of CWLand. The Italian was pushed right to the limit by Read, but ultimately prevailed in two near-hour long sets 7-6(4) 7-6(1). Read started brightly as he looked to silence the home crowd by racing to a 3-0 lead; but the enigmatic Amato clawed his way back into the contest with some stunning winners which left Read reeling as he dropped the early break. The rest of the set would go on service as the CWLander knuckled down to stay level with his higher ranked opponent, but it was Amato who took the first set with an impressive tiebreaker. Amato wasn't going to let Read get the jump on him again in the second, but the world number 30 was equally as secure on his own service. Again, though, it was the tiebreaker that set the two apart as Amato played an impressive series of points before sealing a semifinal showdown with József Boros as Read put a backhand into the net.

The other semifinal will be the much-awaited clash between world number one Jason Hall and world number three Daniel Páez Blanco. However it very nearly wasn't to be as both men were forced to come back from a set down to take their respective matches. Hall dropped the first set to Rasmus Olesen in a frustrating tiebreaker, but fought hard to show why he's the most versatile player in world tennis as he claimed the next two sets to seal a 6-7(0) 6-4 6-3 win. It was an even bigger comeback from Blanco who was rattled early by twelfth seed Davis Kennedy. Down a set and 2-4 in the second, Blanco pulled a rabbit out of the hat to take the second, before dominating proceedings in the decider to retain his flawless clay record.

Seeds Out: 9-Rasmus Olesen (GBR); 11-Henry Charles (GBR); 12-Davis Kennedy (CAN).
