Cricket team draft

Michaelf7777777

International Debutant
Sorry, have no idea how I missed him on the summary.

I'll have Bill Woodfull instead due to his great stickability, reliability and courage. He was known variously as the unbowlable and the wormkiller due to his defensive technique which was so sound that he once went over a year without being bowled at all levels of cricket. I also believe that he has the courage and the technique to anchor the innings against some of the highly good pace batteries that are being formed by other teams as he was one of only two Australians along with Bradman who was able to score consistantly against bodyline. He was also a good captain who built a strong team spirit and was a teacher and headmaster when not playing cricket and was the maths teacher of another member of my team - Keith Miller

Haha - was torn between Woodfull and the bloke I will now pick - besides Miller, Woodfull also taught my dad at one point - a fair bit after Keith would have gone through however, so I'm claiming a personal connection. One of the legends of the game.

That said, I'm taking another opener who is as famous for aspect other than his batting as he is for his overall very admirable Test batting record. He's a leftie, giving me the left-right partnership I wanted with Bob Simpson. He's an excellent slips fielder - take out my comment earlier in the thread about Knott - Simpson - G.Chappell missing nothing behind the bat and move Greg over to third slip. He's also one of the greatest tactical and inspirational captains of the modern era, and I'm passing the few statistically superior batsmen to get his tactical nous and leadership into my team. I take, as my captain and second opener:

Mark Taylor

My tenth pick is my second opener, I'm going with Hanif Mohammad.
Hanif is well known as one of the greatest Pakistani batsmen of all time, holds the world record for the longest test innings and is exactly the wall I need at the top of my order. Possibly under-achieved a little but 3915 runs @ 43.98 is nothing to sneeze at, on top of this he is also my backup keeper as he did play four tests as a WK.

Team so far
1 Hanif Mohammad (55 tests - 3915 @ 43.98 @ 1 wicket @ 95)
2 Herb Sutcliffe (54 tests - 4555 runs @ 60.73)
3 Ted Dexter* (62 tests - 4502 runs @ 47.89 & 66 wickets @ 34.93)
4 Javed Miandad (124 tests - 8832 runs @ 52.57 & 17 wickets @ 40.11)
5
6 Doug Walters (74 tests - 5357 runs @ 48.26 & 49 wickets @ 29.08)
7 Adam Gilchrist+ (96 tests - 5570 runs @ 47.60 & 416 dismissals)
8 Ray Lindwall (61 tests - 1502 runs @ 21.15 & 228 wickets @ 23.03)
9 Wes Hall (48 tests - 818 runs @ 15.73 & 192 wickets @ 26.38)
10 Clarrie Grimmett (37 tests - 557 runs @ 13.92 & 216 wickets @ 24.21)
11 John Snow (49 tests - 772 runs @ 13.54 & 202 wickets @ 26.66)

My tenth pick is my second opener, I'm going with Hanif Mohammad.
So gutted. I thought he slipped under the radar. I really should have went for him when I had the chance last round instead of picking a middle order bat, as there are still heaps of good ones left.

Yeh I've been holding off on him for about three rounds tbh. I know his average is a little low compared to some but he is still right up there in terms of reputation.

69 players selected so far and their is a distinct bias to the more recent day. Understandable considering a) more cricket between more countries, thus involving more players, has been played as time goes on and b) a natural inclination to select players we have seen ourselves or on tv/internet clips. Or you could just presuppose that the 1970s and 1990s were indeed the best decades of cricket ever, and that the 1960s were boring as lots of people have remarked.

Decade made test debut

1900s 1

1990s 10
2000s 14
Still playing 10

I wonder if this trend will continue or if as we go along, and we are perhaps forced to pick players we are less familiar with, it will balance out.

Huh?

My team is bowlers from 7-10, I could fit them in at 11. I could fit in a seamer at 11, then a middle order batsmen at 5/6, then my team would be full.
Didn't you say something about a third seamer, looking at your team now, you have one fast bowler and two spots left, 11 and middle order, you can get a quick to fill the spot at 11 but you still only have two fast bowlers then.
The reason I said you'd be batting Hadlee at 6 is cause for you to get a third seamer its unlikely they'd be a better batsman than Hadlee, Vettori, Benaud, Healy.

Jake you should look at a couple South Afrcian all rounders from the 60s and 70s that opened the batting and bowled medium pace as a third seamer. Both could bat in middle order if required as well.

I have 2 players in mind for the remaining 2 positions, and I had them in mind weeks ago.

Cannot believe VVS Laxman hasn't been taken yet. But I'm jjust a spectator so I'll keep quiet.
Oh noez there goes my last pick.

Seriously there's about 5 or 6 middle order batsman who wouldn't look out of place in anyone's side at all.

I reckon after this is finished if we do a notable omissions list, it'll have some real classy players.

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
I was thinking of picking VVS for my last pick but my side desperately needed a specialist opener before it was too late. Also Bedi's not a bad selection this late in the draft.
