Thought carefully about Sir Frank. In the end though it came down to two players that I've gone back and forth on a lot - very different players but equally valuable to their line ups.
I've gone for Neil Harvey. His final average is a bit low for the company that we've seen to date, but it not only remained >50 for 69 out of his 79 tests, it was >60 for the first 60 of those 79 tests, only sliding down in the twilight of his very long career.
Besides the stats, it was Harvey's ability to score runs in all conditions, and especially when the rest of his team could not cope with the bowling or conditions that marks him as exceptional in my eyes - innings like his efforts versus Frank Tyson at his fastest and Fazul Mahmoud on dodgy matting wickets.
Plus his "diss everything post 1960" ability makes him an invaluable sledger in this kind of multi-generational exercise.
Team so far:
Hammond
Chappell, G
Harvey
Imran
Waqar
O'Reilly
