Cricket team draft

Bruce Reid for me thanks.

Injury blighted his career but he still managed 100+ wickets at a shade over 24. As a 6'8" leftie would got steepling bounce and got slant across right handers or swing back into them with equal alacrity he's the perfect compliment to imran and Waqar. Plus I'd treat him better than the ACB did, ie I'd agree to upgrade my 200cm strike bowler who has a history of back problems out of cattle class for the 26 hour flight to the west indies, rather than save myself 200 bucks at the expense of his career.

Plus there's the added bonus that he might snap in half at any point and give everyone a good laugh.

Team:
Bob Simpson

Wally Hammond
Greg Chappell
Neil Harvey

Imran Khan
Alan Knott+
Waqar Younis
Bill O'Reilly
Bruce Reid.

International Debutant
Lindsay Hassett for my next pick please - top class batsman against both spin and pace. Had a good record as captain in succession to Bradman and more importantly over other options ois that he was also a good openner which gives me greater flexibility for my final two picks and he also knew how to get the best out of Keith Miller.

My Team So Far

Barry Richards
Dudley Nourse
Sir Frank Worrell
Lindsay Hassett
Keith Miller
Leslie Ames
Jack Gregory
Alan Davidson
Hedley Verity

Vaas was plan B and Reid C? Given Davo and wasim are gone intrigued to see who A is.
Still working out plan A, looking at Plan D atm.

Nah I need a leftie as it basically a waste of time having a off spinner even one of quality of Murali without a leftie to rough things up outside off stump. Especially as I will get dud pitch conditions and I can't pick a 2nd spinner. 2nd spinner was Plan A.

@ tharmi - mike Whitney ftw
Got five better lefties ahead him, if I go that way.

I wouldn't mind some extra pace though and just get everyone to bowl around the wicket to lefties to create some rough. A lot of lefties in most sides.

International 12th Man
Neil Adcock would have been one of my picks if he wasn't snatched just before me there Goughy.

Eddie Paynter

One of those players for whom it just clicks later in their career. He was picked for England in 1931 when he had a good but not great record in FC cricket and played reasonably decently for 7 tests coming in and out of the side for 18 months before being dropped properly. He went away and scored boatloads of runs for Lancashire until he was picked again four years later, this time turning it on in tests. He finishing with a terrific average of 59.23 and a high score of 243, though sadly the war ended his career after only 20 tests. An excellent fielder (he kept wicket once during a test when Les Ames broke a finger) and attacking batsman with a brilliant record at number 3, he slots into my line up nicely.

Dale Steyn

We all know about Steyn on here. Lethal when he gets the ball to swing, which is seemingly more often than anyone else seems to be able to, plus consistent speeds around 90 mph/145 ks. He has the best strike rate of any bowler with more than 50 wickets since Lohmann in the 19th century.

My team so far

Hobbs
Lawry
Paynter
Compton

Waugh, S

Dujon
Pollock, S
Holding
Steyn
McGrath

It was very tempting to go for a spinner because there are still a few quality ones left, but it was even more tempting to assemble a downright frightening four pronged pace attack a la the West Indies of the 70s and 80s. There'll be some fight over the new ball in this team I'll tell you! (McGrath and Holding will get it ;))

Well you got me back as I was going to take Paynter. A Lancastrian so good he could have been a Yorkshiremen :)

Im not sure if its a fashionable pick but its the highest ranked batsman left (according to my system).

I select Mahela Jayawardene

My Team

1 Hayden
2 Gavaskar
3 Richards
4 Mahela Jayawardene
5
6 Faulkner
7 Stewart
8 Kapil

International Debutant
Arthur Morris for my next pick please. Top class openner who lost some of his best years to the war. Highly rated by his contemparies including Bradman who considered him the greatest left handed openner ever and one of the top four left handed batsman ever as well as making him a member of his All Time World and Aiustralian XI's. Also a handy part time spinner and member of the leadership group.
