TBF, this was with the bat. It'd be perhaps even more of a surprise if it was his bowling winning games.

Yep he's not done much with the ball so far. I suppose he's only played a few games. If he can win us the last 2 CC games, he'll have been an excellent signing though.

I've read that Sussex and Lancs may be in the chase to sign Ajantha Mendis for next season. If that were to happen (o happy day!) Mo Sami, star batsman or not, will have to be on his way.

Haha, Lancs like their Sri Lankan superstar spinners!

Hope we can see Mendis playing TBF, should be awesome. It'll be quite a challenge for him to repeat Muralitharan's debut season work though.

That is, Imran Tahir won't play in the last couple of games of the season?

Good spinners are the best signings.

Saqlain, Mushy, Murali, Warne and Kumble have had great seasons previously.

Who can blame Counties for wanting them? They can get 80+ wickets a season and bowl 1/4 to 1/3 of all the overs.

Great value for money. A good spinner would top my list for overseas players for any county.

Just checking Saqlain Mushtaqs average in that link. I never knew it was that impressive! For an off-spinner too. Wow.

Mendis potential is just frightening, especially given how bad county batsmen seem to be at playing spin.

What will be the point in playing Pro40 next year? If it's already a given that there will no more Pro40 after next season?
Well I suppose it's still worth playing the top flight seems as you can win a trophy, second division is pretty pointless though

Fully expect Surrey to clinch promotion next season FWIW,

Didn't have the chance to post yesterday, but was absolutely enthralled by yesterday's finish. Actually forgot it was on but fortunately managed to catch the last half hour. Goodwin for England? If he's eligible next season, I wouldn't complain.

Yeah, Surrey made sure he (and Salisbury) got the surfaces they needed that season, and several others around that time. The woefulness of everyone against his Doosra (which in those pre-Harbhajan days was a weapon exclusive to him and still an even bigger mystery than it is today) helped too, of course.

Still, didn't stop Martin Bicknell taking 70-odd wickets at 18s. Just goes to show the use of a good swing bowler to take the pitch out of the equation.

Yeah, I hope he'd rip things up. It'll probably now mean he comes over here and struggles to adjust to the cold or something, which'd be a massive disappointment. But if he could get a good county season in at such a relatively young (24) age, it'd be a huge advantage to him.

Well - would-be promotion surely?

They surely won't market the thing as "promotion" or "relegation" spots?
Depends which competition you're talking about.

There will be promotion in the Championship (for teams such as Slurrey that have managed to achieve relegation this season despite their massive resources).

There will not be promotion in the Pro-40 (even for teams such as Slurrey that have managed to achieve relegation this season despite their massive resources).

Yeah well I mean - obviously I was only talking about the Pro40, as it (and not the Championship) is going to cease to exist after 2009.

Yes thank you, that's what I meant - a top two finish that would mean absolutely zilch. I suppose Division Two champions would be something to celebrate. But we've been in the second tier for a few seasons now so maybe it's not all that likely after all.

As for how we'll do in the Championship, I'm at a loss to guess. Last time we bounced straight back up finishing top of the division, but I have a feeling it won't be as straightforward next year. Certainly can see us struggling against the likes of Gloucs and Essex.

Well - I can't if Ramprakash keeps going, Butcher regains fitness and plays the whole season, Jewell and Meaker turn-out to be the next Bicknell and Benjamin, Saqlain recaptures his former glories, and Schofield is released and Salisbury returns in a blaze of glory with both sides expressing their regret that the partnership was prematurely terminated.

Admittedly, that's a fairly big if though.
