Intercontinental Cup, 2007

Not Terrible
4-6 first choice Irish players... the Dutch I'm less familiar with but are missing a few names as well. Pretty unfortunate really that these teams can't get their best players away from the English domestic circuit like the Test international teams do.

The Dutch 35-3 following on. I do not know whether or not as a Kenya fan to be relieved at how fragile the Dutch look or panicky about how strong the Irish have been...

missing tendo and kervezee mainly...

And Zuiderent, wouldn't you say? Poor ODI record against the Test sides but tends to do well at this level.

Bermuda 34-0 in reply to Scotland's 282, six more for the Rock.

Jeroen Smits is a coward. Ends with an average-boosting 10*, after batting himself below de Grooth, Mol, Statham, Borren, Jonkman and Bukhari.

Canada out for 79 after conceding 374 in the first innings and already two wickets down in the follow on. If this is the tripe they are going to put out because they are no longer in contention for the final then by all means they should introduce a relegation system for the bottom two teams in the competition.

That'd be a good idea, actually. Give Malaysia (who were in the first one IIRC), Uganda or Hong Kong a chance to qualify.

It's a bit bizarre but I don't think relegation will help. It's essentially a development competition and fearing to put out your youngsters because you're going to get relegated won't help any.

Mildly worried about guys like Kandappah getting caps though. (But I guess Canada's selection policies have been messed up for quite a while.)

While this has been set up to aid in Associate development, it is essentially their one chance to play First Class cricket. If they cannot raise a decent team, then there should be the opportunity for an upcoming nation that can to take their place. In any international fixture I believe a country should put their best available team on the park.

Better in terms of development if the I.C leads to the introduction of multi innings domestic cricket as it has with Kenya. That will be of much more use to up and coming juniors than being dealt a thrashing in the I.C

There is a promotion and regulation system of some sorts. But it is based a four year cycle similar to the ODI status. Namibia had to play Nepal to qualify for the tournment back in 2006.

The reason behind the four year quailification match was to allow side to develop teams over a four year period at the same time six teams were playing ODIs. So the two non ODI teams UAE and Namibia wouldn't fall behind the sides playing ODIs, due qualification every year and therefore a gap developing between the ODI playing nations and next lot of teams.

It worked quite well for Namibia as it meant they have had developed at the same pace as the ODI nations and jumped ahead of some sides. UAE came last in the first new addition and would have had to quaifly. Even though they have only won one match, they have improved a fair bit from last season and previous IC.

The overall plan for this competition and general Associate competitions. Is to develop a group of teams all at the same level and therefore improve the depth as whole. Rather then previously when the focus has been on finding the next Test side.

So in theory it is good idea to not have a promotion system and have four year ODI status. The issue is that many sides are still basically looking at the next World Cup qualifers and are going through the motions during this period.

Time to resuscitate this i think.

Two big games coming up - Ireland should walk all over Canada. I would expect them to take the full 20 points and go top of the table.

Kenya v Scotland is a crucial game for both teams. for Scotland it is their last bite at the cherry and they will need to win with the full 20 points to have a chance of making the final.

For Kenya, it is imperative they turn their tour around and also must win if they are going to make the top 2. They still have games against the Netherlands and Ireland to come, but a loss here would make it really difficult to qualify, especially as the momentum would be even greater against them. They have the bowling attack to bowl Scotland out twice, it is just a matter of their batsmen getting their act together and not throwing away their wickets, something that seems to have become an obsession at the moment.

Terrible weather forecasted for the Weekend all over the UK and Ireland, with a strong possibility both matches ending as rain affected draws.
