Aussie talks up all sorts of average players as England material. Scott Parker, ffs.

Well, played quite well to a point. I was perhaps being harsh on Dean, but Aussie keeps on talking him up to international class, and I really don't see it. Yet it may be all different with a full pre-season behind him, we shall have to wait and see.
No i have never suggested Ashton is international class, i just appreciate based on what i've seen of him for West Ham that he can be useful to to the national side especially if he gets a full season behind him.

Unlike some other supporters who complain of us not producing a Fabregas or Ronaldo i know we have limits so i'll back whoever looks like they can be useful to national side.

Definitely not international quality yet, but he hasn't had a full season of Premiership football. Let's see how he goes next season.

I think the important thing here is for you to state why he is England material, IYO.
Ha, didn't expect any other English poster to be up this early.

Anyway on Parker well he is one of those in your face players, very tough tackler, solid passing game & can get up and score goals. I think if he is given the role to play as a defensive mid-fielder he could do very good job.

ATM for West Ham he plays in a flat 4-4-2 formation with no specific role & given that Capello wouldn't have known much about his past exploits at newcastle in 05/06 & 06/07 (a period when he definately warranted selection over the then over-hyped Carrick). There is isn't much of a solid case for him to be picked unless him & West Ham really do something special in the coming season.

Although he wouldn't be a first team player, why can't Scott Parker by England material IYO sir?
Prefer Barry and Hargreaves in that role by far. If i wanted a backup for them then i suppose i'd go for Carrick, but i wouldn't be hugely happy with that, but opta stuff does claim he's great at the little connection passes which is what he'd end up doing.

Limits, weren't you the one who said we had a golden generation who should of won the World Cup and Euros under Sven?

Carrick is clearly better then Parker, which is probably why Sir Alex bought him. From what Mr Mxyzptlk says it looks like Ashton's best in a linking role, and we've got Wayne Rooney to do that, so he's a squad player at best.

Rooney in an England shirt has been rubbish for about 3 years though.
Agreed, but he's the best we've got really. If you were just to drop England players who were crap, we would end up with Dean Ashton in the side, because most have been uniformly rubbish. Parker still wouldn't get in though, because Hargreaves and Barry are about the only mid-fielders that haven't been dog ****e.

Just got to hope Rooney starts playing to club form.

BTW, a rumour I read in the Star (so it must be true:unsure: ), is Adebayor in a swap for E'to and 15 million, if I was an Arse fan, I'd be hoping there was truth in it myself.

In the Hargreaves/Barry pairing which should become our mid-field fulcrum from now on. Barry although he can tackle isn't a strong point in his game so basically Hargreavs is the man on the ball with Barry the passing machine. Carrick would come in you want to replace Barry if he had a bad game but if what i Hargreaves got injured?

That is where Parker has i said would be useful if he is used as a defensive mid-fielder IMO. Really not much cover in the land if Hargreaves gets injured though, not too convinced about Reo-Coker, Joey Barton could be a good man in that role but he has other issues..

Said we had a golden generation, but never said we should have won the WC & Euro's under Sven have always said we should have done better in those tournaments given how encouraging things were looking after WC 02, Sven although a good manager his style messed us up.

Before Carrick joined United the only thing he had over Parker was a an excellent passing game. He never went forward couldn't tackle and was pretty one-dimensional. Since he joined United he looks a more assured player in a Pirlo/Xavi like role but he is surely not clearly ahead of Parker, he still can't tackle.

Reading it now it sound like he is saying Ashton is a target man like Crouch or Heskey. Not a in the hole player like Rooney or Bergkamp. Which yea would make him a squad player competiting with Crouch for the target man role.

Ledley King had that one England game where he was a gun in the DM role, can't remember if that was against anyone remotely good or a minnow though.

Essentially due to being used incorrectly.

I did read a Capello comment a while ago though, where he said he thought Rooney was best as a second striker, so there is hope yet.

Yea & Carragher too i think it was just before the WC. King was was pretty good in the tackle but neither had a passing game nor got forward much which obviously wasn't good enough for the role of the modern mid-field libero.

Hopefully that's Arsenal paying 15 million, rather than receiving it...

No apparently receiving, but that newspaper does make the Sun seem an intellectually valid publication, so I'm not really sure why I brought it up. Had just read it seconds before posting, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it:unsure:
