Apparently they're trying to sign Xabi Alonso, which would then fund liverpool for buying Gareth Barry.

Xabi Alonso, don't think he's as good as Flamini personally, think they'd be losing out there.
If the Dips do manage to fund Barry's transfer by selling Alonso, then they'll have done well for themselves there IMO, even if they will still do sweet FA in the league.

Alonso and Flamini are different style players though. Arsenal pretty much need a hard-man to complinent are of the skill players they have ATM.
This Barry saga is getting a bit funny i must say even if a potential Barry/Gerrard partnership could be a good one i wouldn't believe for one minute that a Benetiz would really want to sell Alonso keeping him & strengthening their mid-field options surely is the way to go.

I doubt Barry will be partnered with Gerrard, I had assumed that, assuming a 4-2-3-1 formation, Barry and Mascherano would be paired in the two, with Gerrard in the middle of the 3. Obviously it's all speculation, but that's what would seem the obvious way to go for me.
