Dennis Lillee.

As with Lindwall, its easy when one asks the question, who is in contention for a place in the all time greatest side.

Nightprowler, I think you really should start putting both batting and bowling figures when you list an allrounder.

Richie Benaud:
Tests: 63m, 2201 runs @ 24.45, 3 100s, 9 50s...248 wickets @ 27.03, 16 5w, 1 10w

Anyway, having said that, Lillee, Australia's greatest pace bowler, which just pips Benaud as Australia's 2nd greatest allrounder (in which he is a long way off Miller)

apple, orange and mango. how can one choose between a great fast bowler, a shrewd leg spinning captain and a technically perfect wicket keeper?

in the late 50s and early 60s, richie was the most enterprising captain and striking leg break bowler playing the game. in the 70s, lillee was the best bowler in the world. in the 90s, heals was the best wk in sight. cant really take away anything from these awesome champions.

but healy would lose the wicket keeping job to gilchrist in an all-time aussie XI and richie would lose to oreilly, warne or grimmett the spinner's slot. dennis lillee is very likely to take the new ball ahead of spofforth, lindwall, davidson and, probably even, mcgrath. i am voting for him.

also, he is the only one of the given three who spent a good ten minutes chatting with me.

aussie tragic.. benaud is probably australia's fourth or fifth best all rounder. miller, jack gregory and monty noble are certainly ahead of him. and may be warwick armstrong too.

I don't think it's quite as cut-and-dried as some are painting it; Benaud was (until the emergence of St Kilda's blonde bombsite) the best post-war leggie Oz had produced & later in his career was bordering on the genuine all-rounder status. There's also the small matter his captaincy, which is universally regarded as very good.

Going for Richie to redress the balance slightly.

I am not so sure that is such a massive compliment, How many other leg spinners of note did Australia produce between 1945 and Shane Warne. This is not to say, I think Benaud was not a great bowler but that he deserves a better 'tag' than that one.

I would say he was one of the three best orthodox leg spinners in the world of the last sixty years, the other two being Gupte and Warne. Some may want to include Abdul Qadir and without getting into an argument with them - one out of four in sixty years in the whole world is fabulous.

To this we have to add his more than decent batting and absolutely fabulous close in fielding. Add to that the fact that he was one of the great captains of all time and you have a picture of this fine cricketer.

I would still vote Lillee of course but that does not mean Benaud was an ordinary cricketer.

Kept to Warne and MacGill so well that you can almost literally count on your fingers the number of real blues he made off their bowling - over 100 tests.

All 3 would make at the very worst Australia A all time.

Going for Lillee though, great man.

neither was healy.. wish some fan of his wrote about him too..
Healy was , in my humble opinion, Australia'a greatest wicket keeper of the last fifty years.

I am afraid many Australians have a difference of opinion.
