Have to say, having seen Sidebottom's hit, it will be interesintg should he and Symonds collide come next season in similar circumstances.

See, the whole problem with that is that there is unwritten customs that are generally upheld and expected by those who play the game seriously and at a high level. That's why disgust is expressed as soon as something like that happens. It'll take years and years of breaking down for this to occur, and the expectation of the spirit of cricket to be upheld in circumstances such as today's will remain.
Don't go there SS. Just don't.

I often agree with your opinions regarding professionalism and the commercial/marketing side of cricket, and how it hast to change, but your opinions regarding sportsmanship and fair play are ridiculous, and reflect a way of thinking in your sports culture, but not ours.

There's gamesmanship, i.e. delaying batting to get away with bad light, which already has its critics, and then there's just blatantly doing the wrong thing.
Exactly. SS, go back to shooting stuff :p

I'd rather win the game than lose with better sportsmanship.
In the end, everything comes down to one's legacy, and often the result paves that legacy, with a winning team being fondly remembered as one of the greats.

Let me ask you, what is more remembered, Australia's win over NZ, or the Chappell underarm incident?

Just like, if England had won this game, Collingwood wouldn't have felt like a winner at all. England 2-1 up would be all well and good but no one would seriously give a ****.

Actually, the game last night until I fell asleep midway through the chase wasn't that interesting ITBT and I was going to post at the time that the most riveting part was the between innings interview with Gower and the ICC president elect who was particularly squeamish for most of it

Also enjoyed the bit on Fox News along the lines of:

'The English will learn the hard way that the Kiwi's forgive, but they NEVER forget...'

Archie, I think Colly did what he did in a split second judgement and I think Ponting probably would have done the same. Twenty20 hindsight is a wonderful thing
So did Wally Grout, but he chose the right thing, and in an Ashes Test, not in a silly game of ODI cricket

And as for SS8-) 8-) 8-)

Ya, saw that and chuckled . Happy it all worked out for NZ, for them to get screwed twice in a row would've been a bit hard to swallow I guess.

At least we're finally seeing some niggle in this series, hasn't been the most riveting up untill the last couple of games.

Just look at flopping in football. It's ridiculous, and is ruining the game.

SS, do you think flopping is good for the game then?

P.S Football = Soccer

I think the incident is more akin to scoring a goal with the opposition keeper lying injured at the time rather than diving.

There are other customs, like batsmen not running when a throw at the stumps has hit their bat.

Yeah, but I was trying to make a point against SS's americaniZation, winning at all cost, purposely running into the batsman. That's not good for the game, just look at diving. They probably even have diving drills at training. Can you imagine a similar thing in cricket?

I think something like that happened the other day. Was it Collingwood who didn't run after the ball hit his bat and went 3/4 of the way to the boundary?
