The supposedly dodgy pitch had very little impact, you cannot use a "hostile environment" as any sort of excuse for a defaet, any team worth their salt will have to play in a hostile environment from time to time, its what football is. Indeed, that was probably the most aggressive atmosphere I can ever recall tbh, certainly in an international match. The ill feeling between both sets of fans and players going into that match was huge, credit to England in that match really, they were never in trouble and controlled the game.
