Indian Premier League

Former Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya, currently out of the Sri Lankan limited overs side, is eager to make a mark for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League starting April 18 and stake a claim for a berth in the national team.

"I am looking forward to playing in the tournament and helping Mumbai Indians win the title. It would be a great thing in my career to open with Sachin (Tendulkar), the best player in the world. I am really happy to open with him," said Jayasuriya over a teleconference from Sri Lanka.

"I met up with him in Hobart during the one-day series in Australia and discussed the IPL. I always love to play for my country, but this is different with all teams having a mixture of players from various countries. I would give my best for Mumbai," said the former Sri Lanka captain.

Describing the Mumbai squad as a strong one, he pointed out that apart from himself and Tendulkar, the team had retired South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock, Dilhara Fernando and young Indian batsman Robin Uthappa.

"We have quite a few good players in Pollock, Uthappa, Loots Bosman (of South Africa). It's going to be exciting as we would be playing against other Sri Lankan players like Kumar (Sangakkara), Mahela (Jayawardene), (Lasith) Malinga and (Muttiah) Muralitharan," Jayasuriya said.

Jayasuriya, dropped from the Sri Lanka one-day team playing in the West Indies, maintained that he was fit and working hard for the IPL.

"I am young too. I am very fit and working hard. I want to perform with bat and ball," said the 38-year-old marauder from Matara in Sri Lanka.

"It (Twenty20) may be a young man's game but I have worked hard. I will try and make sure Mumbai wins (the title)," said Jayasuriya, who played a crucial role in his country winning the 1996 World Cup.

The veteran did not favour a blanket ban on sledging as being demanded by the Indian cricket board, but wanted the umpires to take a more active role to keep it in check.

"We are all humans and you can't stop the chatter (between rival players) completely. You have to handle it carefully and the umpires are there (for this purpose)," said the scorer of nearly 7,000 Test runs.

Jayasuriya, whose record of 411 ODIs has since been overtaken by Tendulkar, was disappointed that Sri Lanka could not clinch the recent Test series in the West Indies.

"We played pretty well in Guyana but could not win the series by losing the second Test in Trinidad. Four early wickets cost us dear and this is an area we need to look into," he felt.

The injury-prone Fernando, expected to open the Mumbai Indians attack with Pollock, said it was great to play with Tendulkar and the other top players.

"It's great to play with Sachin and other international players. I have almost recovered fully (from injury). I can do a lot for Mumbai," he said.

Six youngsters of the team, including a few Ranji Trophy players, said they would gain a lot of experience playing alongside or against leading international players.

Mumbai Ranji players Ajinkya Rahane, Abhishek Nair, Maharashtra's Yogesh Takawale, Baroda's Rajesh Pawar, Dhawal Kulkarni and Aniket Chavan said they would benefit immensely from the tournament.

Jayasuriya is looking forward to opening with Sachin .... Fernando has recovered too

Mumbai is one of the two best teams, along with Delhi, IMO

I'd debate that. Rajasthan and Punjab have got strong title contender teams ready, so they'll give Mumbai a run for their money. GMR, the people running the Delhi team, are more concerned about issues other than performance, as can be seen in their "two-Pakistanis-two-Lankans" strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up losing their first three matches.

I'm supporting Bangalore, the underdogs in this whole tournament. They've got so much to like about them. Substance over style everytime!

Having been in India for the best part of a week now there's a ridiculous number of IPL ads on all the channels over here. Everyone at work is buzzed for it and the first match on the 18th is going to rate through the roof in India.

The Saffies Test series has become somewhat of an afterthought for people here. They're more interested in Sachin and co being fit for the IPL.

Sad

Only reason why rest of the world is even remotely interested is because of amount of money flying around

The cricket is irrelevant

I've just read the Deccan Chargers lineup in the blog, and while that's a lick-your-lips lineup, it's violated the foreign limit of four per side.

I like Bangalore a lot too, but let's see if they actually do have substance specific to a champion 20/20 team.

Chanders showed he can give it a fair smack when the pressure is on yesterday :)

All of the South African IPL players will miss their franchises first four games due to domestic 20/20 commitments.

Lalit Modi had offered the Cape Cobra franchise over $100,000 compensation for the Cobras to forget about Boucher, Kallis, Smith, Prince and Gibbs but CSA due to the investment of Standard Bank in Pro 20 wanted the player’s to return home, even if their RSA franchises do not advance into the next round.

According to Neil Manthorp, Jacques Kallis is inline to lose a quarter of a million $ due to this but Graeme Smith is apparently happy to return home and he reminded all the South African players their loyalty was (firstly) with CSA, not the IPL.

Interesting. Thats an aspect Id not considered. Ie the loss of sponsorship for tournaments and events if players pull out and play in the IPL instead. Obviously when Standard Bank signed the deal they expected a certain quality of porduct. Good to see that it is being kept.

Reckon there might be some sides that end up playing the odd game with a full Indian XI, with players missing to play Internationals, county cricket, Pro20 and injuries. Will be interesting to see how these things unfold and who is actually left to play matches.

I like Delhi and Bombay's line-ups .... a nice mix of Indian and International players .... probably the top two sides in my book

Delhi

Key players: Sehwag, Gambhir, Karthik, Tiwary, Mishra

Internationals: McGrath, Vettori, Asif, Malik, Dilshn, Maharoof and Brett Geeves

Remark: McGrath should be available for most of the games as he has retired, along with the players from SL and Pak

Mumbai

Key players: Sachin, Uthappa, Bhajji, Nehra

Internationals: Jayasuriya, Pollock, Malinga, Fernando, Prince, Bosman, Ponchi and Thornely

Remark: Many of the internationals would be available. Pollock and Jayasuriya should be regulars [which gives a tremendous all-round depth] and they can rotate others around depending upon form and availability

Well what can BCCI expect.. if doesn't share some of its revenue from IPL with other boards.. this is going to continue to happen.
